Milton student arrested in November fatality

MILTON - A Jackson-Milton High School student was arrested Thursday in connection to a fatal bicycle accident in November.

Nathan Skaggs, 18, was charged in the death of Derek Martin, 18, who was riding a bike about 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17 on Mahoning Avenue, Tribune Chronicle newsspartner WYTV 33 News reports.

Skaggs was driving a vehicle that hit Martin from behind and Skaggs had tested positive for marijuana in his system, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield Post reports.

Skaggs is expected to be arraigned Monday in Mahoning County Court in Austintown on a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Masked gunmen hold up North Side grocery store

YOUNGSTOWN - A gun and about $3,000 in cash were stolen during a robbery of University Foods, 590 Fifth Ave., on the North Side about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

An employee told police that two masked men carrying handguns came into the store, and one of them stepped behind the counter and took $2,500 cash from the register and a Glock .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun from behind the counter.

They also took the employee's wallet, which had $500, reports state.

Warren City Schools to receive literacy grant

WARREN - Warren City Schools received a $13,500 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

The Social Emotional School and the Home grant will be used to promote family involvement in literacy and social emotional education for grades K-5 in all four K-8 buildings next school year.

"This Dollar General grant will allow Warren City Schools to extend our school-based social emotional education program, Skills for Life into the homes of our K-5 children, benefiting our families with strategies to create a more peaceful home," Jill Merolla, project manager of Skills for Life, said in a written statement.

The literacy grants support nonprofit organizations that provide literacy services such as adult basic education, GED preparation, English language acquisition or programs for youths who struggle with reading.

Arson blamed in fire on Victoria Street

WARREN - Warren firefighters were called for a fire at a vacant house about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at 1771 Victoria St. S.W.

The intentionally set fire caused about $15,000 in damage to the single story wood frame bungalow, fire Chief Ken Nussle said. The home was ruled a complete loss.

Two firefighters received minor injuries, the chief said.
