Congratulations to Tribune Chronicle staffers who won awards Sunday - 15 in all - in the annual Associated Press Society of Ohio contest. An awards luncheon was held in Columbus. The awards were for work done last year.
The newspaper was one of 67 dailies in Ohio submitting almost 3,000 entries based on circulation in the contest for news and sports stories, feature stories, editorials, columns, graphics and photos. Last year, we won 12 awards. The newspaper is in the Division IV category based on circulation between 25,000 and 74,999. The newspaper's entries were judged by the New York Times Syndicate.
The winning persons and projects, as reported in Monday's paper, were:
Best Editorial Writer, Guy Coviello, first place;
Best Feature Photo, Mike Semple, first place and second place;
Best News Writer, Adam Ferrise, second place;
Best Investigative Reporting, Ferrise, second place;
Best Full Page Layout, Joe Landsberger, second place;
Best Breaking News, news staff, second place;
Best Community Service, ''Fitness Challenge'' and Burt Cole, second place;
Best Headline Writer, Tom Anderson, third place;
Best Business Writer, Larry Ringler, third place;
Best Sports Event Coverage, sports staff, third place;
Best Special Sports Section, sports staff, ''High School Football,'' third place;
Best Special Section, news staff, ''Veterans Day,'' third place;
Best Enterprise Reporting, news staff, ''Snapshots of Crime,'' third place;
Best Page One Layout, Landsberger, third place.
Goodbye fellow Rotarian
I have to use a little space here to say good-bye to a fellow Rotarian, Fred Miller of Warren, who died earlier this week after a lengthy illness.
Fred lived to the age of 79. But I noticed at each Wednesday Rotary meeting as his health deteriorated little by little. Then, I noticed he wasn't coming to the Rotary meetings any more. I knew for Fred to not go to a meeting - he joined Rotary in 1981 - he had to be in pretty bad shape.
Rotary meant a lot to Fred. He truly believed in service to the community. His obituary had a long list of activities he was involved in and Rotary was his favorite. His obituary listed Rotary as his ''No. 1 hobby.''
A lot of people will miss Fred. His calling hours are Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church in Warren and friends will be received 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lane Family Funeral Homes Roberts-Clark Chapel. Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery.
And, you guessed it correctly, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rotary Foundation, c/o the Warren Rotary Club, P.O. Box 68, Warren, OH 44482.
That's not surprising at all.
Meet the editors this week
Don't forget the next monthly gathering for the editors of the paper to meet the public and the public to meet the editors. The next one is 6 p.m. Wednesday at Southington Town Hall. Readers are invited to attend and ask questions and make suggestions. It's free. The atmosphere is casual. Light refreshments will be served. The monthly sessions are part of the Tribune Chronicle's bicentennial celebration.
This will be the fifth meet-the-editors event. Previous locations have been Champion, Lordstown, Vienna and Johnston.
