Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smaltz of Niles are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a variety of activities during the year including a trip to Washington, D.C., in April to view the cherry blossoms; a dinner in May with family and friends; renewal of their wedding vows in June at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown; a lamb roast in August for family and friends hosted at their home; and a trip in September to New York City to attend the St. Gennaro Festival.
Joe Smaltz and the former Carol Uhrin of Newton Falls were married May 5, 1962, at St. Mary's Church in Warren.
Joe, the son of Joe and Elizabeth Smaltz of Niles, is a graduate of Ursuline High School and John Carroll University. He is a former employee and franchisee of Arby's and played football for the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers. He served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain before being honorably discharged.

Carol was employed at General Motors Packard Electric as administrative assistant to the director of engineering laboratories, engineering department; received a real estate license; is a trustee of the McKinley Memorial Library; and is a homemaker.
The couple have three sons, David of Warren and Tom and Joe, both of Niles; two daughters, Anne Marie (David) Hanlon of Murrysville, Pa., and Julie (Michael) Romanus of South Park, Pa.; and three grandsons.
They are lifelong members of St. Stephen Parish in Niles.
