BASEBALL
McDonald 11, Wellsville 1: McDONALD - Nick Puntel struck out eight and drove in four runs for McDonald in this Division IV sectional semifinal. Austin Bucan added two RBIs for the Blue Devils (16-6). McDonald will host Sebring today at 4:30 p.m. in a sectional final.
Ursuline 6, Columbiana 0: YOUNGSTOWN - Sam Donko pitched a four-hitter for Ursuline in this Division III sectional final. Donko added two hits, as did Ryan Strollo, for the Irish (15-5). Rootstown and Crestview will play today at 4:30 p.m. in another sectional final, with the winner playing Ursuline Monday at 4:30 at Cene Park No. 1 in a district semifinal.
Bristol 7, Southington 2: BRISTOLVILLE - Bristol exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in this Division IV sectional semifinal. Kevin Chirozzi and Zach Tomasiak each had two RBIs for the Panthers (10-11). Kyle Reynolds struck out six in the loss for Southington (5-16). Bristol travels to Ledgemont today at 4:30 p.m. in a sectional final.
South Range 5, Brookfield 1: CANFIELD - Andy Lacefield pitched a complete game and struck out seven for South Range in this Division III sectional final. Lacefield, Ross Stoffer and Mason Miller each added a pair of hits for the Raiders (18-7). Alex Yourchisn and Collin Harkulich each had two hits for Brookfield. South Range will play Girard at Cene Park No. 2 Monday at 4:30 p.m. in a district semifinal.
SOFTBALL
Ursuline 6, Springfield 1: BAZETTA - Erin Vukovich's two-run single in the first inning helped lead Ursuline to a win in this Division III sectional semifinal. McKenzie Stimpert allowed only five hits and Marina Bermann had a pair of hits for the Irish (15-12). Charley Troggio had the only RBI for Springfield (6-15). Ursuline advances to play at Waterloo in a sectional final today at 4:30 p.m.
McDonald 2, Leetonia 0, suspended, six innings: LEETONIA - McDonald had a 2-0 lead when the game was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning in this Division IV sectional semifinal. Because Leetonia can't resume the game today, McDonald advances due to a forfeit. Leigh Gatta had 10 strikeouts and had allowed only one hit in the first five innings for the Blue Devils. Emily Magill had two RBIs for McDonald, which will play Columbiana Friday at 4:30 p.m. in a sectional final.
TRACK
BERLIN CENTER - McDonald rolled to both the boys and girls team titles Wednesday at the Inter-Tri County League, Lower Tier meet. Patrick Kunkel was the boys MVP and McDonald's Kaitlyn Srock was girls MVP, each scoring 25 points. Kunkel won both the 800 (2:01.58) and 1600 (5:03.17) for the Blue Devils, while Jai'Lyn Mosley was first in the shot put (36 feet, 1 inches) and discus (135-8). Colton Horvath of Jackson-Milton won both the long jump (20-7) and high jump (6-0).
TENNIS
BOARDMAN - Jad Abdul-Aal of John F. Kennedy won three matches to advance to the semifinals without dropping a game Wednesday in the Division II sectional at Boardman High School. Abdul-Aal defeated Mitch Lohr of Ravenna in the first round, Anthony Steffey of Niles in the second and United's Pierre Gueguen in the quarterfinals. There will be three other quarterfinal matches today. Abdul-Aal will play either Poland's Garrett Gardner or Seth Stennet of Ravenna in the semifinals. In semifinal doubles play at Voley Rogers Courts, Lakeview's Zach McDivitt and Aaron Paczak will play Jay Linam and Andrew Pietrzak of Salem, while Ryan Calcagni and David Shoffstal of Poland will meet Kennedy's Tyler Cole and John Nader.
