Magic wand needed to reduce government

May 6, 2012
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

DEAR EDITOR:

For some time now we have heard calls for a smaller, more limited government. What a great idea that is. Maybe we can take out our magic wands and wave them over Washington D.C. It will likely call for a special curse to be chanted as we continue the waving. I am sure we can come up with something. Just check with the Republican Party.

It's as if only saying we want a smaller government could actually work. We then wouldn't have to come up with a legitimate plan to make it happen. Who wants to go to all the trouble of showing the American people how our government could actually be made smaller. Let's just say the words and wait for it to happen.

I have some other important ideas to propose. Let's cure every disease known to mankind. Next, we need to end all wars and never have another one. How about ending world hunger next? Then we could follow up with an end to the break-up of families. How perfect things would be, right?

I do have a good suggestion if we are truly serious about reducing the size of our government. Since it is members of Congress who are speaking out about reduction, we should begin the cutting process with them. Let's make Congress a part-time job. We could have them all meet by way of teleconference from their home districts or states. They wouldn't need to come to D.C. They would not need a residence there or the need for staff. Of course, we would pay them part-time wages. I like the sound of this kind of cut.

Moving from a fantasy world to the real world is a shocker for sure. We will continue to hear the new wave Republican Party make all kinds of promises as the 2012 campaign heats up. The perfect life we would have with Mitt Romney as our president should take all our fears away.

By the way, many Republicans are wishing that Ronald Reagan had been cloned and could come riding in to rescue us. He did make a commitment to us when he took office in 1981 that he would reduce the size of our government. When he left Washington eight years later, our government had grown even larger. Go figure.

Let us all get out our magic wands. I think we are going to need them.
