ST. JOE'S ANDOVER CENTER HOLDS HEALTH AND SAFETY FAIR: St. Joseph Emergency and Diagnostic Center in Andover is preparing for its 12th annual Health and Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, at the Andover Christian Church, 150 Stillman Ave., Andover. The event will include health screenings, door prizes, refreshments and giveaway items.
MENDED HEARTS TO MEET: Mended Hearts, Chapter 7, a heart support group for heart survivors and their families will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Azalea Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Campus. BETTER LIVING WITH ARTHRITIS PROGRAM OFFERED BY TMH AND ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION: Trumbull Memorial Hospital and the Arthritis Foundation, Great Lakes Region, Northeastern Ohio, are co-sponsoring Better Living with Arthritis, a free community seminar to raise awareness, to educate and to improve the lives of those with arthritis. The event will be held 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 3, at the Magnuson Grand Hotel (the former Avalon Inn), 9519 E. Market St., Warren.
The program will provide the latest news about arthritis and treatment options. Presentations include new advances in knee replacement surgery; updates in rheumatoid arthritis; shoulder arthritis and total shoulder replacement; "Spinal arthritis: Less surgery is more;" what's new at TMH; and "Take Control - We Can Help." The seminar also features exhibits, an AF exercise program demonstration, educational information and door prizes. Lunch will be provided.

VALLEY COUNSELING TO HOST ANNUAL BANQUET: Valley Counseling Services, along with Valley Community Mental Health Foundation, will host its fifth annual Hall of Fame banquet on May 2 at Ciminero's Banquet Center in Niles. This event honors those who work with special needs students. An award also is given to a student who is exceeding in the classroom despite their special needs.
Nominations are currently being accepted for a Teacher of the Year, Rookie Teacher of the Year, Educational Assistant of the Year and Special Student. Nomination forms can be obtained on the VCS website, www.vcsinc.org. All nominees will be recognized at the banquet on May 2 when the award winners will be announced.
Dr. Cynthia Anderson, president of Youngstown State University, will be the featured speaker at the event, and Bob Hannon of the United Way will be the master of ceremonies. CURESEARCH WALK TO HONOR CHILDREN: Hundreds of local residents will gather at noon on Saturday, at the Austintown Township Park for the CureSearch Walk to celebrate and honor children from across the Valley who have or have had cancer while raising money for CureSearch for Children's Cancer, a national non-profit which funds children's cancer research.
Funds raised through events such as the CureSearch Walk allow children with cancer to receive world-class treatment and care at hospitals close to home such as Akron Children's Hospital, Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic. These hospitals are all members of the Children's Oncology Group, the nation's largest children's cancer research collaborative.
At the walk's opening ceremonies, a balloon ceremony that offers a time of reflection in memory of children who lost their battle to cancer will take place. This will be followed by a medal ceremony in which children in treatment for cancer, or who have survived the disease, are called to the stage to be recognized. These children then lead the walk carrying a banner containing their names that reads "These are the Reasons We Walk."

HMHP TO COLLECT UNUSED PRESCRIPTION MEDS: In an attempt to reduce the number of overdoses and accidental poisonings in the Mahoning Valley, HMHP will mark National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day by collecting unused prescription medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown and St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
Unused and expired prescription drugs can be dropped off at drive-through collection sites on the Belmont Avenue ramp at St. Elizabeth and at the main entrance at St. Joseph. Participation is free and anonymous.
Medications collected need not be in original containers. If they are in original containers, identifying information should be removed. Liquid medications, intravenous solutions, injectible drugs and syringes will not be accepted. Learn more about HMHP online at www.HMpartners.org.
VALLEYCARE SEEKS TO AWARD NURSES: ValleyCare Health System of Ohio seeks to honor one of its nurses through its annual Patient Choice Award program. This award recognizes the level of quality care, comfort and compassion offered by nurses each day.
The hospital is asking for community input. A nurse from each facility will be chosen from nominations to receive the Patient Choice Award. The winners will be announced during Nurses Week (May 6 to 12).
Northside Medical Center, Trumbull Memorial Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital ask former patients and family members to be involved in spotlighting an exceptional nurse because patients are the ones directly impacted by outstanding care.
Nominations for the 2012 Patient Choice Award will be accepted until Friday. Nominations can be made online at the hospital's website at www.ValleyCareofOhio.net/nominations. Or, nominations can be emailed, mailed or faxed to the marketing departments of any of the three hospitals.
ST. E'S CENTER HOSTS RENEWED HEARTS REUNION: Some 200 people turned out in April for St. Elizabeth Heart and Vascular Center's sixth annual Renewed Hearts Reunion. Of those, nearly 80 were patients who have undergone heart surgery at St. Elizabeth Health Center in the past year.
The rest were family members and friends of patients, as well as the team of physicians, nurses and other clinicians who cared for them.
Hosted by Dr. Jeffrey Fulton and Dr. Ray D. Crouch, cardiothoracic surgeons at St. Elizabeth Heart and Vascular Center, the reunion celebrated the second chance at life that these patients were given and their resolutions to live heart-healthy lives.
Lal Teckchandani, a Poland resident who underwent heart bypass surgery in December 2010 at age 58 delivered the keynote address, sharing his "patient story."
