DEAR EDITOR:
Every once in awhile, I think we need, as a society, to take an inventory of our pros and cons. It's worth taking an objective look at what's positive and what's not. I have compiled a short list of what I think we have gained as opposed to what we have lost.
Gained: Material wealth unparalleled in history. Lost: An appreciation for the blessing of wealth.
Gained: A me-first attitude. Lost: The humble nature, embracing fellowship and brotherhood.
Gained: The feeling to get mine first and fast. Lost: The concept of real value over short term gain (speculation).
Gained: Instant gratification. Lost: The work ethic, to work hard and achieve success over time.
Gained: A sense that somehow America owes us something. Lost: A real sense of patriotism.
Gained: A value system based on looks. Lost: A value system based on character.
Gained: A belief that we don't need God any more. Lost: Our reliance and trust in God.
This balance sheet won't work unless we switch the lost column to the gain column. It won't be easy. Once a society has sacrificed its principles on the alter of greed, it certainly will take a monumental effort to right the ship, but if there ever was a country that could, it would be the United States. With the help and a true belief in His power, we can be all that God intended us to be.
