Sad ending for symbolic chicken

DEAR EDITOR:

Chickens actually do cross the road. And we would like to say goodbye to the one that did here on North Park Avenue in Champion Township.

Several weeks ago, we had a little fellow who seemed to wander along our country road, which is a main road into downtown Warren. We saw him on the east side and the west side of the road. We were perplexed because, well, you know the old saying. Normally chickens don't wander across paved roads.

There are numerous folks along 422 with free-range chickens that stay in their general domicile. But this little guy wound up hanging in our yard quite a bit, probably because he had no challengers for gathering the critters in the lawn, other than the brazen robin. However today when I came home, I saw the unfortunate fellow, fallen in the road, apparently struck by some inconsiderate individual who decided that mowing down a chicken made him more of a man.

I actually sort of mourn the little guy because he signified what life out here is ... or should I say was. It made me sad. He wasn't my chicken, but he was sort of a symbol of what we like to believe our life is out here. Maybe I was wrong.
