Dying to Live

Chapter Three

"They should be here by now. The sun is directly overhead; it's definitely noon."

"Relax, Mel. We'll give them a few more minutes before we hunt."

Brody observed them carefully, waiting for the right moment. This would be the first time anyone had seen him in so many years, he-rightfully- felt nervous. He himself didn't even know what he looked like. When the twins turned their backs to him, with a shaky breath, he released all of his invisibility veils. Reeling from the shock, Brody attempted to reign in his panic. His momentary hesitation alerted the girls to his presence.

"Dessie . . ."

"Yeah, I see him."

Both stared, transfixed, at the man that stood before them. Rough black hair, tall, muscular, and scarred, he cut an impressive figure, although he seemed uncomfortable. Cursing themselves for being distracted, they whipped out their pistols, aiming for the same spot on his forehead.

"Identify yourself.

Brody finally got his head together enough to consider the situation he was in. His sisters could not know his true identity, but he hadn't thought this meeting through to the point of creating a new name. The girls' eyebrows rose in perfect sync, as if to emphasize their twin-ness.

"Um, I'm William. No last name. I'll declare myself a friend, although that's actually up to you, I suppose."

Brody winced as his voice cracked more than once; he hadn't used it in a LONG time.

"What are OUR names?"

That brought confused glances to both Destiny and Brody's faces. Melody twitched slightly under the pressure, clearly trying to justify her obvious question.

"I just want to make sure he's really the one stalking us!"

"Your names are Destiny-" Brody pointed to the girl on the right, "-and you're Melody." You guys are 16 years old, you made your first kills at nine, and you've been wandering around since you were around eight. Proof enough?"

Their faces didn't change, but the grip on their guns relaxed slightly. If Brody had ever wanted them dead, it would have been all too easy.

"Why are you following us?"

"I'm making sure you don't die. I was trained at the same organization as you for the sole purpose of keeping you alive."

That created another awkward silence as the twins holstered their guns, fairly positive Brody was telling the truth. To his horror, he realized his image was fading away. Melody's eyes widened; she had noticed before Destiny.

"Are you okay? Why are you disappearing?!"

Brody held out one flickering hand, the concentration evident on his face. At some point, without him realizing it, being a person became harder than barely existing. Destiny stared at the spot Brody used to occupy, both girls bewildered at this development.

"William . . .?"

Brody was about to answer when he heard it: the sound of a rifle loading. Being careful to time this right, he waited until the gun clicked, ready to fire. Funneling all of his will into becoming solid, if not visible, the gun fired as Brody tackled his sisters.
