Born March 20, 1911, Hilda Delany, a resident of Shepherd of the Valley in Niles, celebrated her 101st birthday Saturday with her family and the SOV staff.

Delany was the oldest girl in a family of seven children and was primarily responsible for raising her six siblings, only one of whom is still living. She worked for both General Electric and a local pharmacy and for most of her life held down two jobs to support her family.

Following her retirement, Delany became a volunteer for Mobile Meals, while doting on her grandchildren.

''She has always been very proud of and involved with her grandchildren,'' said her son, Ron Delany. ''Her life revolved around them after she retired.''

A mother of three children, Delany has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Although it was a few days early, her family and friends surrounded Delany with balloons and celebrated her milestone birthday.
