The Liberty Township Police Department recently implemented a new alert system for residents that allows the department to send out emails and text messages to residents.
The system, called NIXLE, was first introduced in 2007. It is a communication system that connects residents of the township with the police department.
According to Liberty Chief of Police Richard Tisone, residents can use NIXLE to receive information ranging from community news to police critical alerts. The resident can choose how to receive the message by either text messaging, email or a website.
Messages are targeted to specific geographic areas and if an address falls within the area, the messages will be received.
There is no charge for the service.
To create an account, residents can go to the township website at www.libertytwp.com and click on the link to NIXLE, or go to www.nixle.com and register. Residents can choose what type of information they wish to receive. When registering, the program will ask for the city or community. Residents should enter Youngstown, OH, to see Liberty Township displayed as a community.
According to Tisone, NIXLE not only provides emergency information from the police department, but also keeps residents informed about the community, including weather alerts, safety tips, traffic alerts, local crime information and community events.
