DEAR EDITOR:
We have heard and will continue to hear wild statements made by our presidential candidates. It seems like every four years we are exposed to more and more personal attacks and unsubstantiated accusations. Doesn't it sometimes sound like our young children fighting with each other on the playground?
I guess we had better get our ear plugs ready because the next nine months or so will certainly tax our hearing as well as our patience. We could probably make a TV sitcom out of the comedy we see unfolding.
Many people blame politics for what we see occurring. They are wrong to do so. The simplest definition of politics is the act of governing. The problem is not with how politics operates but with the people who practice it. We need government now more than ever.
It is very important to have an orderly and functioning society, especially with more than 310 million people living wihin our borders. Our local, state and national governments have the major responsibility of working with all of us to maintain that functioning order.
Leadership at the top is called for. The Republican candidates who desire to become president leave a lot to be desired. Newt Gingrich scares me and Mitt Romney does not impress me at all. I don't believe either of them would have the ability to be our national leader. The same could be said for Santorum and Paul.
The election will likely be close. May we all survive the coming months as the candidates focus on each other instead of the issues that are important to us as a nation.
