’Tis election season

Tis' the season for an election.

It's nearly here already - the filing deadline for the March primary is right around the corner - despite less than two weeks ago the culmination of a bruising, divisive general election.

So far, a handful of Democrats and even fewer Republicans have filed the needed paperwork at the Trumbull County Board of Elections to be on the ballot.

And so far, there are no surprises.

Democrats Karen Infante Allen, Humphrey D. Germaniuk, Thomas Altiere, Dennis Watkins, Tom Letson, Sean O'Brien and Pam Rintala have all filed to run for the county positions they already hold: Clerk of Courts, Coroner, Sheriff, Prosecutor, state Representative, state Representative and common pleas family court judge.

Letson and O'Brien are running in newly drawn legislative districts.

Letson also is running for the 32nd District state central committee position.

Members of the state central committee are elected from within the boundaries of the Ohio Senate Districts. In each, a male and female from both parties will be elected, with the responsibility of helping shape and guide the party over the next two years.

Elected last time to the central committee were Letson and Margaret Scott and Republicans Casey O'Brien and Kathi Creed.

So far on the men's side, former state Rep. Randy Law has filed. Creed, Trumbull County's Republican Party chairwoman and Debra E. Roth, have filed for the female spot.

Judge Mary Jane Trapp of the 11th District Court of Appeals in Warren filed her petitions last week with the Lake County Board of Elections bid for a second six-year term on the court. The court hears appeals in Trumbull, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake and Portage counties.

Judge Diane V. Grendell also has filed for a seat on the appeals court.

It's certain there are more candidates to come. A number of people have indicated their intention in three races:

State Sen. Capri Cafaro, D-Hubbard, on Monday is announcing her intention to retain the 32nd District seat, which has slightly altered boundaries. The district still is all of Trumbull and Ashtabula counties, but now includes a portion of eastern Geauga County.

The announcement will be at 6 p.m. at the United Steelworkers Local 1375 Hall on North Park Avenue in Warren.

Sheila Calko of Warren, a Democrat, has a Facebook page, ''Sheila Calko for State Representative (OH-64),'' which is the district represented by Letson now.

Former Maj. Jim Phillips has announced he will be running for sheriff in Trumbull County. Phillips worked for the office for 36 years.

To be considered for the ballot, local, state and U.S. Senate candidates must meet a Dec. 7 filing deadline for the March election.

Don't look though for U.S. congressional candidates yet in March. As it is now, Ohio will have a split primary, meaning the congressional election won't be until June.
