VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR VISION SCREENING: Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries' amblyopia vision screening program is in need of volunteers to help reach as many preschool children as possible during the upcoming school year. The program has expanded the number of schools to be screened, so more volunteers will be needed to accommodate the additional schools.
Trained vision screeners go into preschools in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties and screen children for amblyopia. Training, all necessary materials, and partners are provided for the screenings. The screenings are scheduled during morning or afternoons, Monday through Friday taking into consideration the volunteer's availability. Sessions generally take about two hours. All scheduling and follow up is handled by the program coordinator.
Volunteer training is scheduled for this Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Goodwill facility on Belmont Avenue in Youngstown. Danielle Michaels from the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus will conduct the training session which is mandatory for all program vision screeners.

HOSPICE OFFERS VOLUNTEER CLASSES: Hospice of the Valley's new volunteer class begins Sept. 12 in the Hospice House conference room. Classes are from noon to 3 p.m. every Monday through Oct. 17. Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley's team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for the patients and their family and how volunteers fit into that team.
Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes as well as helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. New volunteers are needed.

SLIMDOWN PROGRAM OFFERED TO ADULTS AND CHILDREN: Humility of Mary Health Partners registered dietitians certified in weight management will start up their adult and children's programs in September.
SlimDown, a six-week adult weight management program taught by registered dietitians who are certified in weight management, will begin classes 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, to Oct. 11 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, 5401 Market St., Boardman, and Thursdays, to Oct. 13 at St. Joe's at the Mall, Eastwood Mall, Niles.
Cost is $40 for new participants and $20 for repeat participants. Dietitians teach lifestyle changes in food, activities and behaviors.
Registered dietitians from Humility of Mary Health Partners and the staff of the D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA in Boardman have teamed up to provide a weight management program specifically designed for children 9 to 12 years old.
Go for It! children's weight management program is a collaborative program of HMHP dietitians and the D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA in Boardman. The program provides nutrition counseling and fitness training, using the expertise of HMHP. Parents also participate in the program. The goal is a healthy outlook on weight and exercise that will last a lifetime.
Go for It! runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from to Oct. 19 the Davis Family YMCA at 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.
On Mondays, children attend fitness classes taught by Y fitness instructors. On Wednesdays, children and their parents attend a nutrition class taught by a registered dietitian certified in childhood and adolescent weight management. The first half of the class is child focused. For the second half, children go to a fitness class while parents continue the nutrition class.
