Churchill Park is usually bustling with activity, whether it is from a community event or the annual Relay for Life, but each summer for the past 55 years children in the township could expect to find plenty to do there.
This year is no exception. The summer camp began June 13 under the direction of Rosie Rokus Boehlke and runs from 9 a.m. to noon each Monday through Friday until July 14.
Registration for the camp is ongoing throughout the five-week run of the program. Children can sign up until the last day of Playground. Sign up at the park pavilion at 9 a.m. on the day your child is to attend.
Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to the camp. The cost is $30 per child or $35 with the party.
Teens who were members of the program in the past are welcome to attend as volunteer assistants.
Parents are requested to tag their child each day with their name, their parents' names and phone number where parents can be reached at all times. Children age 5 are not permitted in the creek.
Each day of camp a variety of activities are offered, including sports activities, hunting for crayfish in the creek, the Actor's Workshop, board games, craft time, story time, special guest speakers and a lot of outdoor fun.
Parents are reminded that children will likely get dirty and should be dressed in play clothes. Children also should bring along sweatshirts or jackets in the event of cooler days.
Children also should bring a snack and a beverage each day of the camp, as there is no drinking fountain in the park. Pick-up time is 11:45 a.m. Parents are asked to be prompt in picking children up from camp as there are no advisors on duty after 12 p.m.
To speed up registration, parents should bring an index card with the child's name, age, parent's or guardian's name, address and phone numbers. Also on the card should be a list of the child's allergies. Camp counselors are not permitted to administer medication.
Donations toward the camp are always welcome, including facial tissues, paper towels, crafts, cups for water, napkins, plates, monetary donations, adhesive bandages and snacks make without nuts.
Anyone with an interesting story to tell, musicians, artists, farmers, storytellers, dancers and other entertainers are welcome to perform during the camp. This year's camp is sponsored by Liberty Walmart.
