MCNALLY PRESENTED RESIDENT'S AWARD: Meredythe McNally, M.D., of Gastroenterology Associates of Cleveland was presented with the 2010-11 Resident's Award for Outstanding Attending Physician by the Department of Medicine at Cleveland Clinic's Huron Hospital on June 3. This award is voted on by the internal medicine residents who are completing their residency at Huron Hospital and given to the most influential teaching attending physician over the course of the year.
McNally, a native of Youngstown, joined Gastroenterology Associates of Cleveland in August of 2009 where she specializes in women's gastrointestinal health issues, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disorders as well as upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures. In December of 2010, McNally and Gastroenterology Associates opened Youngstown Gastroenterology.

DANCE FOR THE CURE: USA Dance members are celebrating men on Father's Day, June 19. In honor of men, the group is dedicating the June 19 dance to "Dance for the Cure of Prostate Cancer" and hope to raise money by hosting a Chinese auction. All men will be admitted free.

NORTHSIDE RECEIVES APPROVAL: Northside Medical Center holds the Gold Seal of Approval in three of its clinical programs.
Certifications awarded include:
* Renewed advanced certification in primary stroke care, maintaining Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center status;
* Recertification for total hip replacement procedures;
* Recertification for total knee replacement procedures.
These disease specific certifications were earned by demonstrating compliance with the Joint Commission's nationally developed clinical standards in both health care quality and safety. They recognize Northside's dedication to continuous compliance with the Joint Commission's state-of-the-art standards.
Northside underwent three rigorous on-site surveys on June 7. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated three clinical programs for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.
The Joint Commission's Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
LOCAL DOC WRITES CHAPTER IN MEDICAL TREATISE: A new medical treatise on emerging surgery techniques for the foot and ankle includes a chapter written by Dr. Lawrence A. DiDomenico, managing partner at Ankle & Foot Care Centers in Boardman.
"Minimally Invasive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle," a 456-page orthopedic textbook by experts and pioneers in the field, includes DiDomenico's "Percutaneous Calcaneal Displacement Osteotomy," which explains a technique that realigns the calcaneous (heel) to improve function and eliminate pain in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.

PREVENT BLINDNESS FIGHTS AMD: Age-related macular degeneration currently affects the vision of more than 90,000 Ohioans ages 50 and older, and AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the Western world.
That is why Prevent Blindness Ohio will join Prevent Blindness America and its affiliates across the country in the "AMD: Awareness Makes a Difference" campaign on Thursday. The day has been designated by the non-profit organization as AMD Awareness Day.
As part of the day's activities, Prevent Blindness Ohio will partner with The Ohio State University and Ohio's Aging Eye Public Private Partnership to hold an AMD summit at the Havener Eye Institute, 915 Olentangy River Road, Columbus.
State Reps. Tom Letson and Marlene Anielski will be recognized for their efforts to raise awareness regarding AMD by sponsoring legislation to declare March Macular Degeneration Awareness Month in Ohio.

SHARON REGIONAL STAFF PRESENT AT CONVENTION: Lisa Bertolasio, coordinator of the Diabetes Center at Sharon Regional, and Sally Tice, nurse epidemiologist, recently presented to the Pennsylvania Association Director of Nursing Administration Long Term Care group at their 23rd annual "Excellence in Performance" convention.
Bertolasio's presentation was titled "Diabetes - Caring for Your Residents - Caring for Yourself," and Tice presented on "Infection Prevention and Control: Achieving Success in the Long Term Care Setting."
The four-day convention was held at the Hotel Hershey and attended by directors of nursing for long term care facilities throughout Pennsylvania.
