Girard Community News , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

Margaret Jenkins of St. Rose School in Girard was recently awarded the Golden Apple Award. The award is given to outstanding individuals who teach or are administrators in Catholic schools.

Winners are chosen from a field of many outstanding educators who have an impact on the development of students within their school.

The award, funded by the Donahue Family Foundation of Pittsburgh, is a recognition of the commitment and witness of all the Catholic school teachers and administrators throughout the diocese.

Jenkins was awarded an unrestricted cash award of $5,000, a certificate, a Golden Apple paperweight and a Golden Apple lapel pin, presented at a dinner held May 19 at the Youngstown Country Club. Stan Boney of WYTV acted as master of ceremonies for the event.

A selection process at the school and diocesan level was used to determine those chosen for the awards.

Recipients were full-time teachers or administrators who have been in the school where they are currently teaching or administrating for at least three full years.

These teachers and administrators must give evidence of the following: professional development, commitment to students and school, leadership qualities, service to Church and community, teaching skills, and role model as a Catholic educator.

In addition to Jenkins, additional award recipients of Golden Apple Awards were:

l Patricia Blanchon, St. Joseph the Provider Elementary School, Campbell

l Melinda Dragomier, St. Paul Elementary School, North Canton

l Kathleen Gernert, Regina Coeli / St. Joseph Elementary School, Alliance

l Sr. Jane Marie Kudlacz, HM Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown

l Russell Nalepa, Ursuline High School, Youngstown

l Pamela Shallo-Hanratty, St. Michael Elementary School, Canton
