TAYLOR TO SERVE SECOND OSHIIP TERM: Kristen Taylor, marketing / admissions director for Shepherd of the Valley-Niles, has been asked to serve a second term on the OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) Volunteer Advisory Board. OVAB assists OSHIIP to improve and expand its volunteer network, addressing areas such as volunteer recruitment, training and retention and beneficiary outreach. The board meets throughout the year in Columbus with telephone meetings on the off months.

SENIOR OUTREACH WELCOMES CHURCH MEMBERS: The SOC (Senior Outreach Citizens) of Champion Presbyterian Church invites and welcomes members of the Champion community and the church family to their June 6 meeting in the church social hall. This month, the group will celebrate summer with a picnic. Meat, buns and drinks will be provided. Bring a covered dish to share. The topic will be titled "The Hands of Time: The early clock industry in Trumbull County." Chris Klingemier, a staff member at Youngstown State University as a guest lecturer and an active member of Historical Society of Trumbull County, will be the presenter.

HOWLAND SCHOOL RETIREES MEET: Howland Schools Retirees will meet at 11 a.m. June 7 at Enzo's.

All retired school personnel, spouses and guests are welcome to attend the monthly meetings of the group, which meets the first Tuesday of every month except July when it will meet on July 12. Cost of the lunch, payable at the door, is $10 with a choice from the three-to-four entrees offered.

An update will be given on the HCSF Breakfast at which a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Howland Schools Retired Personnel was awarded to Nikita Dhami, Howland High School graduating senior. The collection of non-perishable food and household supplies brought to the meeting will be delivered to Beatitude House, Warren. Petitions to put a referendum concerning Senate Bill 5 on the November ballot will be available to sign by those wanting to do so. AREA ON AGING SPONSORS PROGRAM: The Area Agency on Aging 11; Help Hotline Crisis Center; Mahoning County Mental Health Board; Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board; Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board; Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation; Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull County Suicide Prevention Coalitions are sponsoring a program to help anyone who works with the elderly to recognize the warning signs and risk factors and to promote early intervention and treatment options for depressed older adults.

Signs of Suicide: Focusing on Older Adults will feature Jules Rosen, M.D., Chief of Geriatric Psychiatry Services at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Approximately every 97 minutes, an older adult commits suicide. Americans older than 65 account for 16 percent of all suicides, equating to 14 suicides every day. One of the leading causes of suicide among older adults is depression, which is often overlooked, undiagnosed and untreated.

Anyone who works with or knows an older adult is encouraged to attend. Two-and-a-half continuing education hours have been approved for social workers, counselors, RNs and LPNs.

The program will be held from 8 to 11:45 a.m. June 8 at Das Dutch Village Inn, located in Columbiana. The cost is $15 per person and includes breakfast. Checks can be made payable to Help Hotline Crisis Center, Inc., P.O. Box 46, Youngstown, OH 44501.

AUTUMN HILLS CARE CENTER SERIES: Autumn Hills Care Center is offering a free ''Rockin' The Lawn" summer concert series to be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 7 to 7:45 p.m. June 12 and 7 to 8 p.m. June 26, July 10 and 17. Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs.

GUARDIAN ANGELS SEARCH FOR VOLUNTEERS: The Guardian Angels of Ohio, a volunteer guardianship program of the Trumbull County Probate Court, is looking for volunteers. The next monthly meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. June 1 at Perkins' Family Restaurant, 1953 Niles Cortland Road S.E.

The Angels reach out in friendship to people who are elderly and alone in Trumbull County by providing trained, qualified volunteers to serve as advocates. For more information, contact 330-675-2521.

RETIRED TEACHERS SPONSOR BEE: The Trumbull Retired Teachers Association is accepting registration for the 2011 Trumbull County Fair Spelling Bee. The 25th annual spelling bee will be held at 1 p.m. June 30 at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds. Pre-registration will take place through Saturday.

Pre-registration will allow free fair admission (rides not included) for all preregistered spellers, grades one through eight. To pre-register, call Denise Deltondo at 330-530-4011.

Students wishing to participate in the bee may do so even if they have not preregistered. They can register at the fair on June 30 from noon to 12:45 p.m. on the historical stage.

All participants receive a gift bag of coupons and treats.

NUTRITION PROGRAM: The Trumbull County Nutrition Program for the Elderly is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs and operates nutrition sites at 10 locations throughout Trumbull County. These sites provide a meal and the opportunity for socialization. Donations will be accepted.

Any senior citizen 60 and older and spouses of those 60 and older are welcome for lunch at any of the following sites:

Meals are served about noon at the Kinsman Fire Hall. A donation for the meal is accepted and the doors open at 10 a.m. Cards and bingo are played every day, and singing is on Wednesdays. FARMINGTON SENIOR CENTER

The SCOPE Senior Center is seeking volunteers to help seniors in the area make lap robes and walker caddies for the Shepherd of the Valley nursing home. No sewing ability is needed, just a desire to learn. The group meets at 1 p.m. every Monday.

Another area of need is the chorus. The chorus sings at Briarfield at the Ridge once a month to entertain the residents. They also perform at the center and whenever needed in the Niles community. The chorus meets at 1 p.m. every Friday.

Lunch is offered Monday through Friday on a first-come, first-served basis to seniors 60 and older. Cost is $2 but not required and the number of meals is limited. The Austintown senior center features speakers at 11:30 a.m. every Friday followed by the taping of the Senior Focus TV show. Speaking today is Dr. Holly Reinke from Centers for Hearing Care.
