SENIOR OUTREACH WELCOMES CHURCH MEMBERS: The SOC (Senior Outreach Citizens) of Champion Presbyterian Church invites and welcomes members of the Champion community and the church family to their June 6 meeting in the church social hall. AREA ON AGING SPONSORS PROGRAM: The Area Agency on Aging 11; Help Hotline Crisis Center; Mahoning County Mental Health Board; Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board; Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board; Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation; Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull County Suicide Prevention Coalitions are sponsoring a program to help anyone who works with the elderly to recognize the warning signs and risk factors and to promote early intervention and treatment options for depressed older adults.
Signs of Suicide: Focusing on Older Adults will feature Jules Rosen, M.D., Chief of Geriatric Psychiatry Services at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.
Approximately every 97 minutes, an older adult commits suicide. Americans older than 65 account for 16 percent of all suicides, equating to 14 suicides every day. One of the leading causes of suicide among older adults is depression, which is often overlooked, undiagnosed and untreated.
Anyone who works with or knows an older adult is encouraged to attend. Two-and-a-half continuing education hours have been approved for social workers, counselors, RNs and LPNs.
The program will be held from 8 to 11:45 a.m. June 8 at Das Dutch Village Inn, located in Columbiana. The cost is $15 per person and includes breakfast. Checks can be made payable to Help Hotline Crisis Center, Inc., P.O. Box 46, Youngstown, OH 44501.

The SCOPE Senior Center is seeking volunteers to help seniors in the area make lap robes and walker caddies for the Shepherd of the Valley nursing home. No sewing ability is needed, just a desire to learn. The group meets at 1 p.m. every Monday.
Another area of need is the chorus. The chorus sings at Briarfield at the Ridge once a month to entertain the residents. They also perform at the center and whenever needed in the Niles community. The chorus meets at 1 p.m. every Friday.
