Aaron Thompkins, of Howland, who lost more than 200 pounds on the popular television program, The Biggest Loser, will be serving as Challenge Champion for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley for the program's Pound for Pound challenge.
The program works with local food banks throughout the country to raise money for people in need.
"I am excited to continue on my journey and honored to serve as the Pound for Pound Challenge Champion for the Food Bank,'' Thompkins said.
During his time on the television program, Thompkins lost almost half his body weight. When he first appeared on season 10 of The Biggest Loser, Thompkins weighed 468 pounds.
Local residents can take part in the Pound for Pound challenge to benefit Second Harvest. For every pound a resident of the Mahoning Valley pledges to lose, Second Harvest will receive 11-cents. Those who wish to donate without losing weight also can donate to the fundraiser.
Participants can log on to www.pfpchallenge.com to sign up for the challenge. Those who pledge to maintain their weight on the website will trigger an automatic five pound donation.
In 2010, residents in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana Counties who participated in the challenge lost more than 14,000 pounds.
In 2010, the Food Bank distributed 8.3 million pounds of food in the tri-county area.
