THE FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM OF TRUMBULL COUNTY is recruiting volunteers 55 and older to tutor, mentor, strengthen reading skills in children, assist teachers and work with adults with developmental disabilities.

All volunteers are offered mileage, preplacement training, supplemental auto insurance, supplemental accident insurance, annual recognition luncheon during National Volunteer Week, free monthly luncheon and fellowship, and liability insurance. Income-eligible volunteers are also offered paid vacation, sick time, personal time, and a tax-free, nonreporting stipend.

There is a need for volunteers in the Hubbard, Bristol, Newton Falls, Girard, Kinsman, Niles, Hartford, and afternoon classes for Warren Head Start. New volunteer training will begin in January. Those interested should call 330-373-6480, Ext. 227, to leave their names and telephone numbers to reserve spaces.

The free AARP Tax Aide program is seeking volunteers for 2011. Individuals need not be an AARP member or have previous experience in the tax field. Free training programs begin Jan. 10 at Howland Community Church, 198 Niles Cortland Road. The training results in IRS certification for all tax counselors. Other non-certification positions are also available.

NILES AMWELD RETIREES meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. the second Wednesday of every month at Atmosphere Cafe, 815 Youngstown Road, Niles.

HOWLAND SCHOOLS RETIREES will hold their first monthly meeting of the New Year at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Enzo's Restaurant, Elm Road, Warren.

Former VAN HUFFEL AND VANEX TUBE EMPLOYEES meet at 8 a.m. Fridays at Wayside Restaurant, 825 State Road N.W., Champion. For more information, call Jim Franklin at 330-856-4231.

The AUSTINTOWN SENIOR CENTER, 100 Westchester Drive, is offering several new activities and services.

Celtic Healthcare will provide free blood pressure checks at the center from 10 a.m. to noon. Mondays.

Yoga, line dance and walking exercise classes are now forming. Seniors can sign up for these and other activities at the table near the front entrance to the senior center.

Carole Moore, Mahoning County coordinator for the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program, will counsel seniors on Medicare insurance options from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays. Seniors can visit the center beforehand to sign up for no cost appointments.

Ward Center Presbyterian Church, 490 Lucy St., Masury, will serve FREE LUNCHES for those 60 and older from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the third and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

McDONALD SENIOR CITIZENS will meet at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

AJAX MAGNETHERMIC RETIREES will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Station Square, 4250 Belmont Ave., Liberty. Guests are welcome.

The TRUMBULL COUNTY NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR THE ELDERLY is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs and operates nutrition sites at 10 locations throughout Trumbull County. These sites provide a meal and the opportunity for socialization. Donations will be accepted.

Any senior citizen 60 and older and spouses of those 60 and older are welcome for lunch at any of the following sites:

l Cortview Village, 100 Cortview Drive, Cortland, noon Thursday and Friday

l Girard Multi-Generational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave., Girard, 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

THE KINSMAN SENIOR CITIZEN NUTRITION SITE is open every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to those 60 or older or those whose spouse is 60 or older. Meals are served about noon at the Kinsman Fire Hall. Cost is $1.25 per meal, and the doors open at 10 a.m.

Cards and bingo are played every day, and singing is on Wednesdays.

FOWLER-VIENNA SENIOR CITIZENS meet every Thursday at the Fowler Community Center.

The group meets from 9:30 a.m. or later to play cards and games, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and for a 50/50 raffle and meals. Special meals are served on the fourth Thursday of the month. Cost is $3 each.

All those 55 and older are welcome. Annual dues are $12.

JOHNSTON SENIOR CENTER

Open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Membership is $12 a year. Puzzles and games are played daily. OSU Buckeye necklaces are for sale for $4.50, with all proceeds to benefit the center.

Three computers with free Internet are available every day.
