The American Cancer Society is offering the PATIENT NAVIGATOR PROGRAM to help to individuals who may have trouble getting a ride to and from cancer treatment; lack insurance or prescription coverage; need information about their cancer diagnosis; and a number of other individual issues.

The Alzheimer's Association will be holding its monthly Caregiver Support Groups at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, 1350 East Market St., Conference Room F, Warren.

The WARREN CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT has influenza vaccine available for children ages 6 months to 18 years of age. The vaccine will be given at a regular childhood clinic on Dec. 20. The walk-in clinic hours are from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $5. Unison and CareSource are also accepted. Parents should accompany children and bring their shot record.

Adult influenza vaccine is also available by appointment. Cost of the vaccine is $20. Pneumonia vaccine is also available free of charge to those who qualify.

AKRON CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL MAHONING VALLEY celebrated the second anniversary of the opening of the Beeghly Campus with a ceremony and the lighting of the children's tree held last week on the Beeghly Campus which is located at 6505 Market Street in Boardman.

The celebration included carols by the children of Hitchcock Woods Preschool, cocoa, cookies, a visit by Santa Claus and children's activities including face painting, cookie and ornament decorating and more.

In addition to the tree lighting ceremony, a wall of honor recognizing the Beeghly family for their contributions was unveiled. Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley Beeghly Campus is the site of the former homestead of Leon and Mabel Beeghly. The wall features photos of the original Beeghly home as well as family pictures.

VAYDA COSMETIC LASER CENTER, 4681 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Champion, is offering free skin cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. This will be a visual full body exam for skin cancer.

ANKLE AND FOOT CARE CENTERS in the area are ready to accept donations of shoes for the podiatrists' 2010 shoe drive now through Jan. 7. Shoe collection stations are now in place at eachof the group's 19 locations, all of which are accepting new or nearly new shoes.

Locally, there are centers in Austintown, Champions, Howland, Liberty, Niles, Warren and Youngstown.

CHRONIC FATIGUE AND / OR FIBROMYALGIA SUPPORT GROUP will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 20, at the First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave., Warren. Members and guests are invited for the holiday party. Bring snacks to share if you can. For more information, call 330-847-7001.

THE NILES CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT will hold a child immunization clinic from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Children younger than 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those attending must have child's immunization records.

THE Q CLUB FITNESS FACILITY is offering a free workout the third Saturday morning of each month. Offered are aerobic classes, zumba classes and water classes.

SLIMDOWN, a six-week weight management program taught by registered dietitians who are certified in weight management, will begin classes the first week of January at Humility of Mary Health Partners sites in Warren and Boardman. Classes are scheduled for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 4 to Feb, 8 at St. Joe's at the Mall, Eastwood Mall, Niles; and Thursdays, Jan. 6 to Feb, 10 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, 5401 Market Street, Boardman. Cost is $40 for new participants and $20 for repeat participants.\Dietitians will teach lifestyle changes in food, activities and behaviors. Registered dietitians from Humility of Mary Health Partners and the staff of the D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA in Boardman have teamed up to provide a weight management program specifically designed for children 9 to 12 years old.

SLIMDOWN FOR KIDS provides nutrition counseling and fitness training, using the expertise of each organization. Parents/guardians also participate in the program. The goal is a healthy outlook on weight and exercise that will last a lifetime.

The program runs Jan. 3 to Feb. 10. Participants meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays for fitness activities and 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays for a nutrition class, which parents/guardians also attend. The first hour of the nutrition class is child focused and the last half hour is for parents/guardians only while the child takes part in more fitness activities. Registered dietitians certified in childhood and adolescent weight management teach the nutrition classes; fitness classes are taught by YMCA fitness instructors. All classes are held at the D.D. and Velma Davis Family YMCA at 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.

Registration is through the Y. YMCA members may register online. All others may call for a registration form at 330-480-5656. Cost is $60 for the six-week, three-day-a-week program.
