Niles Schools Superintendent Rocco Adduci last week announced his retirement from the district to be effective July 31.
Adduci, 61, said he decided to announce his retirement now to give the board time to determine what qualifications they would like to have in the next superintendent.
Wanting to explore other options, Adduci said he would not rule out the possibility of taking another teaching or administrative position. He has worked in education for 35 years, with 11 as a superintendent. He was appointed Niles' superintendent in 2004 and had previously worked as superintendent of the Weathersfield School District.
''I'm keeping all of my options open,'' he said. ''I'm not sure I will want to just continue in retirement or find something else in education or in the public sector.''
"I could teach at the college level," he continued. ''I even considered a political office of some type.''
Adduci also would not rule out the possibility of returning to Niles as the superintendent if the school board made the request.
"That is something the board would have to decide," he said.
The board will not begin an official search for a new superintendent until after the first of year, according to board president, Marlene Rhodes.
