THE YOUNGSTOWN WALK TO DEFEAT ALS will be held 10 a.m. Oct. 10, at the Eastwood Field, 111 Eastwood Mall Blvd., Niles. Check-in begins at 9 a.m.
ALS is often called Lou Gehrig's disease after Lou Gehrig, a hall-of-fame baseball player for the New York Yankees who was diagnosed with ALS in the 1930s.
The walk is 2.5 miles.
THE LOW-VISION SUPPORT GROUP at Park Vista Retirement Community will meet at 10 a.m. on Oct. 12 in the Park VistaNorth Lounge, 1310 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. The topic, "Low Vision Tricks and Treats" will be presented by Debbie Kogler from Magnifiers and More. Kogler, along with her service dog, Murphy, will talk about tricks (hints) and treats (low vision aids) to help people live as independently as possible. Mahoning Valley and surrounding area residents are expected to participate in the upcoming OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALK scheduled for Oct. 9. The fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) by helping to provide local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs.
The Mahoning Valley (Youngstown) Out of the Darkness Walk is one of nearly 220 Out of the Darkness Community Walks being held this fall nationwide through December. The walks are expected to unite more than 60,000 walkers nationally and raise nearly $4 million for suicide prevention efforts.
The Mahoning Valley community walk will begin at Mill Creek Park in Youngs-town at 9 a.m. and end at approximately noon. Walkers can register for the event through the AFSP's Web site, www.outofthedarkness.org.
