GIRARD - Pauline Stoner Collins of Girard was honored at her 100th birthday celebration by family and friends at Enzo's Restaurant in Warren.
The event was held in August although Collin's birthday is Sept. 19 and was hosted by Ronald and Sally Collins Snyder of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Thomas and Janice Collins Pallante of Girard. Her nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren were among the 90 people at the party.
Family and friends came from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, New York and Florida. Family held the party earlier due to grandchildren and great-grandchildren's school schedule, which would prevent some from being able to attend.
Collins attended Indiana University and California University and received her bachelor's degree in 1955 at Youngstown State University.
She started teaching in a one-room school for grades first to eighth in Yukon, Pa. She taught for the next two years grades sixth to eighth at another one-room school in Owensdale, Pa.
She left teaching to go into four years of social service with the elderly, the blind and mother's assistance.
She married Walter J. Collins from Scottsdale, Pa. in 1935. They moved to Girard in 1937 and were married for more than 49 years until his death in 1985.
Collins resumed her teaching at Braceville in 1950 where she taught for four years before going to McDonald in 1955 to teach at Roosevelt Elementary School. Collins retired after teaching 45 years.
Collins was the secretary of the Girard Seniors for many years and followed that as treasurer. In 1991, she was selected as ''Senior Citizen of the Year.''
She golfed and bowled until age 95. She enjoys reading and plays bridge with her friends.
