RACHELE KELLER of Warren was named a recipient of one of 38 Youth Survivor College Scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year. All 38 scholarships were funded and made possible to Ohio youths because of partnerships between the American Cancer Society and companies, grants or foundations throughout Ohio.
Because of a generous donation of $20,000 in memory of John Washinka, who lost his battle to lung cancer, a $1,000 scholarship was started in 2005. Scholarships in memory of Washinka are presented to one student in the Mahoning Valley area each year for 20 years.
Keller of Warren, received the John Washinka Scholarship and will attend Robert Morris University.
This year there were a total of 97 scholarship applications. All scholarships awarded by the Society's volunteer scholarship review committee were based on scholastic performance, community service and leadership.
Due to limited funding and the competitive nature of this program, the American Cancer Society was not able to award scholarships to all young cancer survivors who applied. Special consideration was given to first time applicants.
Scholarship applicants are residents of Ohio, United States citizens, diagnosed with cancer before age 21, younger than the age of 25 at the time of application and plan to attend an accredited university or community college in the United States.
Applications for the 2011-12 scholarship program should be available in the fall of 2010.
