Adult CPR training nearly every Wednesday evening this month at the training center at 8392 Tod Ave., Boardman.
"Be Red Cross Ready" means you learn to recognize heart attack signs and symptoms as well as how to administer emergency care and treatment. Open to the public as well as professional rescuers, this class will be offered Wednesdays, May 5, 12 and 26 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The $35 course fee includes hands-on skills, a participant manual for each student to keep, and Red Cross certification. These classes are open to everyone, age 14 or older.
This is the first time a local church group has hosted this wonderful and informative presentation. Attendance fee for the entire event, including the Red Cross program is $3. Each participant will also receive a personal booklet to take home.
The presentation offers plain-talk information about early signs and symptoms of a heart attack and other life-threatening emergencies, the value of early recognition, and how to care for someone until help arrives.
There is no testing, hands-on skills or certification. Participants will view a DVD, listen to a speaker, and have the opportunity to ask questions.

THE HOWLAND FIRE AND EMS TRAINING CENTER, 169 Niles Cortland Road N.E., Warren, will hold a healthcare provider course from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 15, and a Heartsaver First Aid and CPR class from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 22.
The healthcare provider class will provide training on CPR for adult, child and infant as well as the use of an AED. The class is open to those individuals that are in the healthcare profession or those entering into healthcare. The cost for the class is $50 for a new certification and $35 for anyone that is recertifying.
The first aid and CPR class will train individuals in CPR for adult, child and infant. It will also include first aid training and the use of an AED. The cost is $85 for first aid and CPR training. CPR training only is $50 for new certifications and $35 for recertification.

REHAB EXPRESS is an educational program for potential rehab patients and their families about what they should know about going to any skilled nursing center for rehabilitation. NORTHSIDE HOSPITAL'S Center for Orthopedic Excellence has earned the Gold Seal of Approval for health care quality. The Joint Commission awarded Northside the Disease-Specific Care Certification for total joint replacement of both the hip and knee.
As of today, fewer than 100 hospitals in the nation have total hip and knee certification, and only six hospitals in Ohio, including Northside, which is the first in northeastern Ohio.
To earn this distinction, a disease management program undergoes an extensive on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers every two years.
St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph Surgical Weight Loss Center is taking a step forward in raising awareness of obesity by presenting the area's first WALK FROM OBESITY on May 15 at Boardman Park.
The Walk from Obesity was established to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic and to support initiatives focusing on prevention, education, research, treatment and advocacy. In cities all across America, those affected by obesity will join forces and walk to raise money for research, education, prevention and treatment of the life-threatening disease of obesity.

May is national SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. The American Cancer Society encourages people to be "sun safe" when they are outside during the upcoming spring and summer months.
As part of the month's activities, a free skin cancer screening will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 11, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital's Ireland Cancer Center, 1353 E. Market St., across from Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
Doctors Robert Brodell, Stephen Helms, Indira Krishnarao, Arvind Padubidri and Peter Sarkos will provide the exams.
Cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers. It accounts for about half of all cancers.
Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap is a catch phrase that the Society uses to remind people how to protect themselves from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. People should slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat and wrap on sunglasses to protect the eyes and sensitive skin around the eyes from UV light.

The event will focus on four areas. First, attendees will be able to sample the latest appetizers, hors d'oeuvres and desserts from area restaurant chefs and cooks as well as local bakeries. Second, vendors will have a variety of the latest fashions and jewelry on display for participants to view and purchase. And last, the message of breast cancer awareness through mammograms, clinical breast cancer exams and breast self exams will be highlighted.
Volunteers are needed to help solicit food and merchant vendors, with set-up and clean up, with decorating the auditorium and with various tasks at the event.
Also, in April 2009, the American Cancer Society launched a major brand revitalization effort focused on helping people better connect with the organization and understand all it has to offer to defeat cancer.
"The Official Sponsor of Birthdays" campaign was introduced to the public so people could imagine a world with more birthdays. The ongoing campaign highlights all of the ways the society saves lives by helping people stay well; by helping people get well; by finding cures; and by fighting back.
All local cake decorators and bakeries who attend will challenge each other to an awareness inspired cake competition for public display.
The categories of the cake competition will be Most Creative, Best Presentation, Tastiest and Best Awareness Message. Area bakers will make a cake of their choice prior to the event and bring it with them. All cakes will be judged by celebrity judges and the participants who attend.
Sheet cake samples of the creations will be available. The cakes will be auctioned at the conclusion of the evening with proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society.
In addition, there will be a candlelight ceremony in honor of and in memory of breast cancer survivors and those who lost the battle. The candles are similar to a luminary and will be available at the event for $5 each.
Live music and a Chinese auction are also planned.
Cost for the event is $25 per person in advance and $30 at the door. Special rates are available for groups and parties of eight or more. Seating is limited, therefore reservations are strongly encouraged.
