Wrapping up the 2009-10 season

Girard girls basketball looking forward to next year’s campaign

Sure, Girard girls basketball coach Andy Saxon wished things had gone better.

His Indians team finished 6-15 and lost in a Division III sectional to Ursuline, which advanced to regionals.

"Most of the games this season we were in," Saxon said. "There were only three or four games which were blowouts - very competitive throughout the season. We had the opportunity to win four or five more here or there - break here, break there."

The good news is Girard only loses two seniors in Melissa Weitzman and Chelsea Guerrieri. The rest of the team is tentatively returning.

The team's leading player was junior Katelynne Brainard, who was named first-team all-All American Conference, Blue Division. Her sophomore year, she was an all-league player as well.

"She can play forward, center. She's probably one of our best 3-point shooters," Saxon said. "She has a lot of potential.

"Hopefully, she progresses and gets better."

Junior Desiree DeFrank and Kaylin Sandridge also made strides as well this season, Saxon added.

"The juniors progressed pretty well," Saxon said.

Other players on this year's roster were junior Brielle Bello, sophomore Michaela Sigurani, freshman Hayla Spalla, junior Caroline Standohar, sophomore Calia Carter, sophomore Courtney Kellar, freshman Michaelle Angelo, freshman Allison Rose, freshman Lindsay Durkin and freshman Miranda Boyle.

Younger teams like the junior varsity and eighth grade have been successful, which may translate well for Girard in years to come.

"Some of the other girls coming up aren't too bad," Saxon said.

The JV team tied with Champion for the AAC Blue Division title.

"That's a good thing," Saxon said. "I had like five freshman and two sophomores that played JV."

However, getting players prepared for next season many not be as easy as say a couple of years ago because of volleyball. Most of the girls on the team play the sport and practice it year round, as opposed to spending time on basketball, Saxon said.

"A lot of it will depend what they do in the offseason," Saxon said. "I lose a lot of kids to volleyball, most of them are volleyball players.

"If they stick out and work, the future looks pretty good, but who knows."
