Special bowlers

January 17, 2010
Tribune Chronicle

Four times a week, Crest Lanes in Warren welcomes bowlers with special needs, including one group on Saturday that has met for the past 30 years.

"It's pretty much open to anybody with disabilities of any kind," said Rick Nelson of Crest Lanes, who noted that the bowling alley provides ramps to assist bowlers.

On a recent Monday, about 30 bowlers came for a night of strikes and spares.

"We try to make them as comfortable as possible, and they have a lot of fun," Nelson said. "They come in, you joke with them a lot, you announce their scores if they bowl a good game. It's a real comfortable atmosphere."

The Crest Lanes Special Bowlers is a bowling league for anyone age 6 through adult who has special needs. The league bowls on Monday evenings, with some warm-up time around 6:15 p.m. and bowling starting at 6:30. The cost is $7 per week. For more information, call Judy Valenti at 330-856-4475.
