LEANNA HARTSOUGH visited Washington Square Healthcare Center in Warren on Dec. 5. She sang and danced for the residents while wearing her great-grandmother's hat.

WHITE OAK MANOR is hosting a senior community birthday bingo for anyone 60 and older at 2:30 p.m. today. Guests born in December may register to win a birthday basket drawing (with proper identification).

UFWC LOCAL 880 RETIREES CLUB's first regular meeting of 2010 will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 12 at Lucianno's Restaurant in the Wedgewood Plaza. Membership is open to all UFWC Local 880 retirees, who may bring a guest.

Ward Center Presbyterian Church, 490 Lucy St., Masury, will serve FREE LUNCHES for senior citizens 60 and older from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the third and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

GIRARD MANOR ASSOCIATES LTD., in conjunction with the Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority, has announced that applications are now being accepted for seniors age 62 and older Girard Manor, which will be located in the 400 block of Washington Avenue and will feature a fitness center, lounge, Internet cafe and enclosed picnic area. Rents are based on the income of applicants, and names will be placed on waiting lists in the order they are received.

AARP OHIO urges older Ohioans and those who care for them to take advantage of Ohio's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP - formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), which can help put food on the table during tough economic times. Participants get an Ohio Direction Card, a special debit card to use at most grocery stores, certain senior centers, farmer's markets and meal delivery services - the card is used like a credit card and the cost of groceries is deducted from the account balance. New benefits are added automatically every month.

Older Americans and those who care for them can find everything they need to get started at AARP's Benefits QuickLINK Web site: www.aarp.org/snap.

AARP TAX-AIDE is a program of the AARP Foundation, offered in conjunction with the IRS.

The AARP Tax-Aide Programs in Trumbull, Columbiana and Mahoning counties are seeking new volunteers to assist in tax preparation for the 2009 tax year. The program takes place at 14 sites in Trumbull County and six sites in Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

Anyone interested in participating in this program who lives in Trumbull County is asked to call Pat Baldwin at 330-399-8846 at Warren SCOPE Center for more information. Residents of Columbiana and Mahoning counties may call Steve Phillips at 330-158-3609. Volunteers may also apply at aarp.org.

THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGING and the OFFICE OF THE STATE LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN and Governor Ted Strickland call on all Ohioans to visit a nursing home and share the spirit of the season with its residents during Visit a Nursing Home Week, Dec. 24 through 31. the observance also is a time for individuals to become more involved in the care a loved one or others receive and join facilities as they strive to provide excellent care for all residents.

Contact local nursing homes to see if they are planning holiday events, or join with a church, school or civic organization to plan a visit. Caroling, writing letters, sharing treats and cards, putting on a holiday program and creating artwork for the facility are all great, intergenerational activities. It as advised that volunteers check with the facility to find out what their visiting hours are, if they have any restrictions on gifts or treats and if children or pets are welcome.

The TRUMBULL COUNTY NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR THE ELDERLY is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs and operates nutrition sites at 10 locations throughout Trumbull County. These sites provide a meal and the opportunity for socialization. There is a $1.25 charge for each meal.

Any senior citizen 60 and older and spouses of those 60 and older are welcome for lunch at any of the following sites:

THE KINSMAN SENIOR CITIZEN NUTRITION SITE is open to senior citizens 60 or older or whose spouse is 60 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Meals are served about noon at the Kinsman Fire Hall. Cost is $1.25 per meal and the doors open at 10 a.m.

Cards and bingo are played every day, and singing is on Wednesdays.

FOWLER-VIENNA SENIOR CITIZENS are invited to meet every Thursday at Four Seasons Mobile Home Park.

The group meets from 9:30 a.m. or later every Thursday to play cards and games, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and to enjoy a 50/50 raffle and meals. Special meals will be eaten on the fourth Thursday of the month. Cost is $3 each.

All those 55 and older are welcome. Annual dues are $12.

McDONALD SENIOR CITIZENS

Meetings are held 11 a.m. every other Wednesday at McDonald United Methodist Church. Those attending should bring their own lunch.
