AARP OHIO urges older Ohioans and those who care for them to take advantage of Ohio's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP - formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), which can help put food on the table during tough economic times. Participants get an Ohio Direction Card, a special debit card to use at most grocery stores, certain senior centers, farmer's markets and meal delivery services - the card is used like a credit card and the cost of groceries is deducted from the account balance. New benefits are added automatically every month.

The AARP Tax-Aide Programs in Trumbull, Columbiana and Mahoning counties are seeking new volunteers to assist in tax preparation for the 2009 tax year. The program takes place at 14 sites in Trumbull County and six sites in Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGING and the OFFICE OF THE STATE LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN and Governor Ted Strickland call on all Ohioans to visit a nursing home and share the spirit of the season with its residents during Visit a Nursing Home Week, Dec. 24 through 31. the observance also is a time for individuals to become more involved in the care a loved one or others receive and join facilities as they strive to provide excellent care for all residents.
Contact local nursing homes to see if they are planning holiday events, or join with a church, school or civic organization to plan a visit. Caroling, writing letters, sharing treats and cards, putting on a holiday program and creating artwork for the facility are all great, intergenerational activities. It as advised that volunteers check with the facility to find out what their visiting hours are, if they have any restrictions on gifts or treats and if children or pets are welcome.

The TRUMBULL COUNTY NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR THE ELDERLY is provided by the Trumbull County Office of Elderly Affairs and operates nutrition sites at 10 locations throughout Trumbull County. These sites provide a meal and the opportunity for socialization. There is a $1.25 charge for each meal.
