Fall means a lot of activities

September 14, 2009
By KATHLEEN EVANOFF

If summer cookouts, vacations, festivals and fairs weren't enough for you, what comes next is sure to keep everyone with plenty to do over the next several months.

The schools opened last month to the beginning of yet another season of community activities that everyone should be anxious to attend. These include performances by the drama clubs, band concerts, choir concerts and the myriad of other activities that the start of the cold weather brings.

Don't forget that the Howland Farmers Market is also still up and running through the middle of next month and each week they have entertainment and demonstrations that are sure to be both educational and entertaining.

Everyone seems to be back from vacation, but ff you aren't, you are missing out on the beginning of the best of the season's activities. Over the few two weeks, local high school bands performed for each other and everyone else wishing to attend to introduce themselves and show off what they will be bringing to the half-time shows at their respective schools.

Attending high school football games is an exciting way to spend an evening. The players, cheerleaders and band members work very hard, giving up much of the last few weeks of their summer with practices and performances, so they can present the best show possible for the fans and residents of their communities.

Friday night football isn't just about the game. It is about the announcers shouting out the names of the players and their excitement when the home team scores. It is about the cheerleaders firing up the crowd and the concessions with their steaming cups of hot chocolate, and one of my favorites, much to my husband's amazement, taco salad served inside a bag of tortilla chips.

And if you can't attend the game, remember that all the latest scores will be printed in the Tribune Chronicle and delivered to your doorstep first thing Saturday morning. Rooting for your home team, whether you care about the game or not, helps to fuel community pride and a sense of camaraderie within the boundaries you and your neighbors live.

Keep up that community spirit and take part in local activities. You don't want to miss out on all the fun.
