Cops: Burglary was part of scam

Girard Community News

Police say a Dearborn Street man's home was burglarized last month by someone claiming to work for the county surveyor's office.

A resident of the 500 block of Dearborn Street said a truck pulled in his drive and a man said he was from the surveyor's office and that they needed to go in the backyard.

The homeowner went in the backyard with the man, who then left the homeowner and told him to stay there, reports state. The homeowner waited and then went in his front yard and noticed the truck gone. He went inside and found dresser drawers in his upstairs rooms opened. A large amount of cash was taken, police reports state.

Police Capt. Frank Bigowsky said police in Beaver Township in Mahoning County have reported similar crimes recently. Detective Eric Dattilo of the Beaver police said in the first instance on July 10, two men appeared at a home and tried to talk the elderly resident into having work done on her roof.

The younger of the two men was on a cell phone and when the pair left, the woman discovered her jewelry boxes were rummaged through, but nothing was taken. In the second incident July 13, the men asked someone about a car for sale in front of their home, but when they were told the car was not for sale, they left.

Dattilo said Girard's case is slightly different but one similarity is that the descriptions of the younger suspects match.

The Mahoning County Sheriff's Office had a similar case last year, Dattilo said.
