What are Issues 2 and Proposition 2?
Issue 2 will be on the Ohio ballot next fall and creates an Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. This Board will establish guidelines for food animal care developed by Ohioans who use scientific and factual information to ensure farmers can continue to provide excellent care for their animals and safe, affordable, locally grown food for Ohioans.
The Board will be made up of Ohioans. It will include three family farmers, two veterinarians, a food safety expert, a representative of a local humane organization, two members from farm organizations, the Dean of an Ohio Agriculture college and two members representing Ohio consumers.
Ten members will be appointed by the Governor and one each by the House and Senate. The Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture will serve as chairman.
Issue 2 has the support of all major farm organizations in Ohio, legislative leaders from both parties, Governor Strickland and the Ohio Department of Agriculture. It is considered important to both farmers and consumers.
Proposition 2 is legislation, pushed by animal rights groups, that was passed in California. Regulations in this legislation were developed without factual, science based information and essentially will put California's poultry farmers out of business, causing higher egg prices for consumes and causing the loss of thousands of jobs in that state. Animal rights groups want to bring this same bad legislation to Ohio.
Issue 2 will be on the Ohio ballot next fall and is both farmer and consumer friendly. It deserves the support of both groups. Ohioans should determine their own livestock care standards, not have them imposed by outside groups.
Support Issue 2 when you vote in November.
