Howland spends on Web overhaul

June 8, 2009
By BILL RODGERS Howland Community News

Howland Village trustees recognized Howland student Autumn Heald, whose poster about fire safety was one of the statewide winners in a fourth-grade poster contest selected by the State Fire Marshal's office, according to Chief George Brown.

The presentation was included in the regular meeting of the township trustees last week. Unfortunately, the yearly calendar the fire marshal puts out, which features the annual safety poster contest winners, will not be coming out next year due to budget cuts. Brown said he was speaking with the district to get the poster featured in a community calendar.

Howland Fire Inspector Kelly McGilton presented the artist with a stuffed dalmation, a certificate and a gift card.

In addition to the award presentation, trustees voted to contract with a company to create informational videos for Howland's Web site. The township will spend $1,975 in the agreement with Clear Choice Advertising, which will create a video for each department to be featured on the Web site.

"We're going to have a new township Web site, one that will be more modern than the one we have now," said trustee Rick Clark, who will be recorded welcoming visitors to the page.

The township's Web site is located at www.twp.how-land.oh.us. Some pages on the site appear to have not been updated since late-2008.

In other business, trustees also:

l authorized the transfer of $5,000 from the transfers fund into the burial expenses fund for an unclaimed body burial;

l approved hiring Eric Latz as a part-time firefighter with no benefits and at a rate of $11.93 an hour;

l purchased a hard drive for the fire department telephones at a cost of $1,590;

l approved purchasing mapping software for the planning and zoning department at a cost of $4,255.68 plus a maintenance contract of $1,037 a year;

l declared properties at 442 Clifton, 7968 Castle Rock, 1315 Niles-Cortland, 8712 Stetson, 2230 North Road, 1455 North Road, 1156 Roseway, 1997 Ewalt and 2126 Ewalt to be public nuisances;

l heard from Brown, who said Safety Town, a safety course for preschool-aged children entering kindergarten, would take place August 10-12 and 13, 14 and 17. The program is made possible through a $3,000 grant from Sam's Club. Interested parents are asked to call the fire station to register.
