Senior watch group holds open house

June 1, 2009

Police Chief Richard Tisone said he liked Wednesday's open house so much he wants to do another one next year.

Tisone said he wants to give the public a chance to meet his officers in other ways than when they are responding to a call.

The open house also was held to showcase the township's new dispatch center Senior Watch program, which was started last year after an elderly Mansell Drive resident froze to death on her front porch after being disoriented. Officers sent twice to the area of her home on a 911 call could not find her before she died.

Tisone said he wants the public to get to know the people who are trying to protect them, which is often hard because of the nature of police work.

''We've gotten away from that for years,'' Tisone said. ''We seldom get to meet people unless we're called to their house.''

A big hit for those who wanted information on the watch and dispatch center was their newest member, Capo, a police dog who was sworn in earlier this month and works with Patrolman Ray Buhala.

Capt. Toby Meloro is heading up the Senior Watch from the police department's end, and he said 39 people have signed up for the program. He said those 39 are called daily and if no answer is received, they are called back 45 minutes later. If again there is no answer, a cruiser is sent to check on them.
