Ford cutting production in North America

DETROIT (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. says it is cutting North American production for the rest of the year as high gas prices and the weak economy depress its sales.
The Dearborn-based company said Thursday it also expects to break even in 2009, scaling back its goal of returning to profitability by that time.
Ford says it will cut production by 15 percent in the second quarter, 15 to 20 percent in the third quarter and 2 to 8 percent in the fourth quarter.
The cuts primarily will affect pickups and sport utility vehicles, which have seen sales plummet in recent months. Ford plans to increase its production of cars and crossovers.

Yeah, gone are the days for the urban tanks, we need ecomony cars... or better yet, we should clog the highways with bicycles and mules to protest jacking up the gas prices. I don't know about anyone else but I feel like we are being lied to with new excuses to justify the cost. It's been blamed on Katrina Hurricane, demand for gas in the countries we exported our jobs to, the falling dollar, speculators stocking up and anything else they can think up while gas companies rack up record profits on top of record profits. We're being robbed at the pump. It's greed, pure greed. And they sit in congress rationalizing a spin on supply and demand? Fine... I no longer demand gasoline other than via an occassional taxi ride. Walking aint crowded. We should all use alternate forms of transportation as much as possible.

Simple solution, go back to making smaller cars and stop with the SUV and other gas hogs. I remember in the 70's, things were really bad and alot of people got smaller cars that they could 1) afford and 2) keep gas in it. Many people lost their jobs back then too. Sometimes, smaller is better.
