Man gets five years in Warren torture case
By CHRISTOPHER BOBBY Tribune ChronicleWARREN — The first of three men accused of torturing a man with a blowtorch, electric grinder and sledge hammer over a drug debt was sentenced to five years behind bars Wednesday.
Michael DeSantis, 22, said nothing as he was sentenced by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge W. Wyatt McKay, who handed down three years for a firearm specification and two-year concurrent sentences on felonious assault and abduction, which was reduced from a kidnapping charge.
Cases still are pending against DeSantis’ father, Stephen H. DeSantis, 47, who lived with his son at 928 South St. S.E., and Brandon Finney, 22, 935 N. Mecca St., Cortland. Both face similar charges and remain in Trumbull County Jail.
The men are accused of kidnapping Shane DeSmith, 25, of Riverview Drive N.W., on Feb. 24 and torturing him over a seven-hour period. DeSmith said the ordeal was over a $50 bag of marijuana.
DeSmith told police his toenails were ground off and his toes ground down with the grinder after he was hit over the head with a beer bottle and then beaten with a 2-by-4 board and the sledge hammer. He said the father and son called the third man to come over and take part in the torture.
DeSmith said he finally told his captors to ‘‘just shoot me, dude.’’
Armed with a search warrant, detectives entered the DeSantis’ South Street home, confiscated a yellow chair, coveralls, a .32 caliber revolver with bullets, a hammer, torch and cleaning products, and took six evidence swabs wiped on the basement floor of the home.

What Court System, do we have one? A slap on the wrist for cruel and unusual punishment for a $50 bag of pot? And that taught "who" a lesson?

Boy, did this article ever open a can of worms, eh? I think DeSantis should have received more time for what he did. I don't think the article is about what is legal or illegal, it was about the prison time. When everyone is right, a person can not debate. Name calling is juvenile, and it doesn't make points with anyone.

Only 5 years? What a tragedy. These jerkoffs should get at least 20 years. Their is no excuse for this kind of action. Someone that tortures another person is sick. Let them go to prison for a long time be raped and humilated like the scum they are for a long time. They are nothing but punks.

Still just name calling. Say something intelligent and relative to the article. We're waiting. Are you just trying to pick a fight or do you have something to add to this dialogue other than your criticism?

Come on, WarrenMan, if you are so educated say something intelligent. Say something relative to the article. Perhaps, you need to get your parent's permission.

Warrenman, It happens to be an on-going dialogue. You'll have to start from the beginning to understand that it was a dynamic growing discussion. It has nothing to do with my parents knowing if I am on-line. They are both dead. However, I did notice that not a single one of your postings were relative to the article. You we more preoccupied with criticizing those already in a dialogue.

Obesity is also a major problem in our society. I would never suggest making fast food illegal. But am opposed to making known problems legal just to watch them escalate.

Could it be that if you continually inhale carcinigen fill smoke deep into your lungs you will eventually kill yourself? Come on it is clearly unhealthy. In the long run it cost people money when you are old, disabled, and on oxygen because you have emphazema. That is why it is illegal and should remain that way.

Is the answer in the depletion of brain cells? Is it the emotional addiction? Is is the fact that habitual use of marijuana will likely lead to the use of even stronger narcotics?

But, wait a minute. You said it is impossible to overdose on marijuana. How then can you possibly use too much of it? You're contradicting yourself.
