He was born Feb. 25, 1921, in Warren, a son of the late Dwight Hartzell and Beatrice Grove Thompson.
Mr. Thompson was an assembly supervisor on the assembly line at Packard Electric, from which he retired on Oct. 1, 1976. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy as a seaman 1st class.
Richard was a member of Champion Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the choir for 19 years. He also was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and an alumni of the Mahoning Valley Chapter 57 National Association of the Civilian Conservation Corps. After retiring from Packard Electric, Richard painted houses with Thompson Painting Co. and bowled for its group. His favorite hobbies were carpentry and woodworking.
In addition to his wife, Marjorie Bascom Thompson, whom he married Dec. 20, 1946, of Warren, he is survived by two daughters, Lynette (Scott) Wiseman of Warren and Patty (David) Cook of Niles; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Helen Shand and Araminta Sager, both of Warren, Leah Clinefelter of Canfield, and Anna Catherine Yerkes of Riviera, Ariz.; and two brothers, Don Thompson of Cominchera, Calif., and Charles A. Thompson of Warren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter and grandson Barbara and Gregory Hudson (deceased May 16, 1998); a brother, Dwight Thompson and a sister, Martha Redman.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Pastor Richard Ferris will officiate. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home.
Entombment will be in Meadow Brook Memorial Park following the funeral.
