Kathleen Kelly Bryner 1910-2008

NILES — Kathleen Kelly Bryner, 98, formerly of Niles, died Monday evening, May 19, 2008, at Lake Vista of Cortland.

She was born April 16, 1910, in Niles, the daughter of the late Michael and Nettie Hamilton Kelly, and was a lifetime Trumbull County resident.

Kathleen attended Bolindale Elementary School and was a 1928 graduate of Howland High School. She earned a two-year diploma from Warren City Normal School, a bachelor of arts degree from Ohio University and a master of arts from Duke University.

Her 43-year teaching career included elementary grades in Warren City Schools and Bolindale, Howland High School, Central Junior High School and Warren G. Harding High School. Kathleen taught American literature, speech and drama and directed the school plays. She served as adviser to the Dramatics Club, the Thespian Troupe, the Speakers Bureau and ‘‘The Cauldron’’ literary magazine.

Kathleen was a member of Beta Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers’ sorority, Northeastern Ohio Drama Teachers, The American Association of University Women, Business Women’s Club of the YWCA, the National Story League and the Warren Story League. She served on the advisory board of Story Art magazine, to which she contributed original children’s stories and articles about the art of story telling. She was a Martha Holden Jennings scholar in 1968.

For nearly 80 years, she was a member of the North-Mar Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, where she taught Sunday school classes, belonged to the Crusaders Class, the Margaret Wearley Missionary Society and assisted with the Pioneer Girls program. In 1933, she and Mrs. M.B. Howard introduced into the local church two programs that are still continuing: Children’s Church and Vacation Bible School.

Her interests were reading, traveling, book reviewing, theater, writing children’s stories, story telling and cooking.

Her husband, Kenneth W. Bryner, whom she married Dec. 26, 1971, died Aug. 27, 1992. Two brothers, Lyle and Donald Kelly died in childhood; and one grandson, Scott Bryner also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her stepchildren, Evelyn (Henry) Wheeler of Tallmadge, Lawrence (Barbara) Bryner, Ralph (Marilyn) Bryner and Dale (Patsy) Bryner, all of Brimfield and Lloyd (Nancy) Bryner of Tyler, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Arrangements are being handled by Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel in Warren where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, with Pastor Myron Daum officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Mar C&MA Church memorial fund.
