Genevieve Shaughnessy 1913-2008

WARREN — Genevieve Shaughnessy, 94, a resident of Warren, formerly of Terra Alta St. N.E., died Friday, May 16, 2008, at Community Skilled Care Center.

Genevieve was born Oct. 27, 1913, in Cleveland, to Felix and Katherine Giemza.

She married Edward Shaughnessy July 22, 1939, in Orwell. Together they had four children and were married for 53 years.

Genevieve worked at the Ohio Lamp Division of General Electric. She was employed as a school crossing guard at both McKinley and Lincoln schools for more than 20 years. She taught chair caning in Adult Education at Warren G. Harding High School. She and her sister Helen enjoyed buying and selling antiques.

She attended St. Mary’s Church in Warren and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She loved gardening, traveling and most of all, time spent with her family and many friends. She will always be remembered for her friendly disposition and kind heart.

She is survived by her son, Dennis of Santa Barbara, Calif.; daughters, Kathleen (Rudy) Luhaney and Annita (John) Homlitas, both of Warren; seven grandchildren, Edward (Ellen) Shaughnessy, Michael Shaughnessy, of Easton, Pa., Brian (Sharon) Shaughnessy of Albany, N.Y., Daniel (Nicole) Shaughnessy of Worcester, Mass., Erin (Chris) Henson and Brendan Shaughnessy of Santa Barbara, Calif., Beth Homlitas of Warren; and one great-grandchild, Ian Shaughnessy of Albany, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward J.; and son, Edward P. Shaughnessy; and three sisters, Marianne Southern, Veronica Giemza and Helen Meus.

The family wishes to thank her friends and caregivers at Clearview Lanterns Suites, where she made her home for the last year and a half.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church, with the Rev. Bernard Schmalzried as celebrant. Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, where a prayer service will take place at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery.
