UAW, GM have new labor contract

LORDSTOWN — United Auto Workers Local 1714 at the General Motors Corp. Lordstown Complex have a new local labor contract after 56 percent of voters ratified the pact early this morning.
Production workers rejected the agreement by one vote,or 50.1 percent to 49.9 pecent, local president Dave Green said. Skilled trades workers ratified it 65 percent to 35 percent.
With the vote, Green said the West Metal Center plant is ‘‘one step closer to where we need to be’’ to get GM’s commitment of a new vehicle for the plant when it ends production of the current Chevrolet Cobalt in June 2010.
