Parents speak out against zero tolerance
More than 100 people turn out for rallyBy BILL RODGERS Tribune Chronicle

‘‘He was pushed into the fight. He had to defend himself,” said Larry Larson about his grandson. “I asked if he had taken a whupping and went to the hospital that would have been right?’’
Larson was one of more than 100 people who attended the rally at New Jerusalem Fellowship on Palmyra Road.
Another speaker, Josie Freeman, said her grandson was accused of tripping another student and expelled. She said he was on the football team, had a 3.2 grade point average and was told his expulsion meant he would not be allowed to attend another public school in Ohio.
Since he was too young to attend an alternative charter school, he sat around the house, she said.
‘‘It was a sad thing to see my grandson lying around the house, not doing anything. He couldn’t go anywhere. They threw my grandson out there,’’ Freeman said.
The school district has said they cannot release disciplinary records of individual students.
As such, pastors calling for a change to the fighting policy have asked for stories like these so they can study the policy.
‘‘We cannot acquisition the files, but you can,’’ the Rev. Frank Hearns of Second Baptist Church told parents.
The ad-hoc group, formed recently by pastors such as the Rev. Alton Merrell to question why two seniors in the school district would not be allowed to graduate this year. The seniors were expelled along with a sophomore girl under the zero-tolerance policy.
The group is circulating a petition urging the district to allow the girls to return to class with the two months they were out considered sufficient punishment.
Speakers at the rally pointed out that some districts suspend students who fight for three days.
‘‘We agree there must be discipline, we simply believe that the punishment and the crime have got to fit,’’ Merrell said.
They further urge that the policy needs to be revised to exercise discretion on a case-by-case basis. One speaker questioned why a student who defends themselves should be given the same measure of punishment as an aggressor.
Though school administration states students can appeal the punishment, the group argues that the arbitration process lacks impartial arbitrators.
The petition ends by stating an ongoing program of cultural diversity and sensitivity training be adopted for teachers, administrators and school board members.
The speakers discussed the role race plays in the policy, with the consensus being that it affected everyone regardless of race. Royal Mayo, district coordinator of the NAACP, was there for support and said the policy was too harsh and needed to be changed. And city Councilman James Pugh called for diversity training and for the district to hire people ‘‘who look like our kids.’’
But several of those waiting to speak, like Larson, were white.
‘‘My grandson was expelled from high school, and he’s white. Ö This was on a clean record,’’ he said.
School Board President Robert Faulkner said previously that the board would discuss the policy at an upcoming retreat. Hellweg stated earlier that since the policy was adopted, there were fewer fights in the district.
Following the rally, Merrell said his group was expecting a phone call from school officials this week. They hope to speak to the board about the policy.
‘‘We need to go to the policy makers,’’ Merrell said.
Warren schools have been closed this week for spring break.

i was unable to write what i wanted last night because my conservative wife was over my shoulder..lets be real about this. blacks and whites have diffrent views about this situation. white people should be honest with themselves and everone else... i served my country with the united states marine corps and have traveled this country and the world. i have never been to a more racist state or community than the one that i was proud to call home ... we all made mistakes as children and it a shame that we want these kids to more than kids they will make mistakes and yes they will have to learn from them but do we have to give them the death penalty because of a fight.. i got into fights in school but i was good enough to protect you from the terroist who wants to kill any american black or white..lets come together and protect our kids, our community and families..be real with yourselves if you dont like us dont use excuses other than your true feelings and tell us

Viper whether your a snowflake or a lump of coal it doesn't matter. Both white and black have been suspended sinse this policy has been put into place. The girls that are complaining now where not defending themselves. Common sense should tell us all that. One little girl attacked two other girls at once. Right, I believe that. They did the crime and now they do the time.

I'll trust a serial rapists apology over a 15 year old saying it wasn't his fault he got in a fight any day of the week. I only trust teenagers as far as I can throw them. They're cocky, rude, and liars. Don't tell me your precious little snowflake isn't any of that because your delusional at best. I couldnt of made it any clear then that pahootaman and your right 80% of them are like that. And if they come from a wealthy family there even worse.

i am so sick and tired of these people making it a black/white issue.. the main issue is that our children are not getting the proper leadership and the correct support from our community. we all should be ashamed that our children are not getting taught lifes lessons and our teachers are so enamored with that darn test ...i went to school with whites and had white teachers and had some of the best childhood lesson taught to me were from them.. can i say the same for my sons now? no i cant and thats a shame....

why are teachers the one who need diversity training and for the district to hire people ‘‘who look like our kids.’’. Who are our kids, only black kids, what about all kids (black, white,or any other color) and then it raises the question, what about black teachers who are hired are they going to have to attend the same training. Again everything falls back to the teachers, what about the parents teaching the right thing, our community leaders doing the right thing. Its not about being black or white, it's about doing what's right. When we in school everyone know the policy. Not one thing on kid, and another for this kid. If we got into trouble we knew what to expect, for everyone.

I do find it interesting that the education received does not seem to be the solution to this problem. If it were, I would expect fights involving the lower grades and not seniors. -Peace

This is not a white and blaack issue. It is a home training issue. Pugh and the others need to help their people be humans.

The community leaders are making it a race issue. Pugh making statements that the teachers the district hires do not have experience with the "Black experience". What kind of statement is that if it isn't racial? The kids were warned and decided to not heed the warning. Shame on them and shame on the school administration if the policy hasn't been administered equally. As a employer in the valley I can say that we have a zero policy for fighting and over the past decade we've not had a single incident at the workplace because of it. The employees know that if you harm another employee they will be terminated. Defending themselves or not. Its time these kids learn some self-control, even if their parents aren't teaching it to them at home where they should be learning it.

The Warren School Board should stand its ground. I find it shocking that these so-called ministers started their campaign during Holy Week. On Easter Sunday, they were passing out petitions. What are they thinking? They should join the schools in promoting Peace rather than Violence.

If the issued were about the victims that defended themselves people would be a lot more supportive. The pastors are wrong to defend all of the girls in this case. The one's that started it should be expelled.

The pastors private life have nothing to do with wanting the best for all kids. Whereever they have done or didn't do they will be judge for that by someone higher than us. Stick with the real problem like I said before not all kids are kicked out of school. What about earlier in the year when a boy was beat by 3 other boys and he had to go to the hospital at school and they were allowed to go back to school? Noone think there is a problem here that needs to be addressed. Some of teachers and admin. don't live in this district or have sent there kids to other schools. Mr Faulkner kids went to Labrae and he lived in Warren City District. Where is the justice in this. The Pastors care that's shy they are involved. Get with the program.

I am really shock at some of these response that want to make this a race issue or about the lack of dicispline the kids recieve regardless of who raise them. Get with the program and realize that what some of these kids are going through your kids or grandkids could be faced with the same situation and how will you feel when that happen. Don't sit on a high horse and judge rectify this terrible situation that will leave kids with free time to think about. How will you fill if one of these kids break into your house because schools kicked them out. You lived your life and made your mistakes and were forgave by someone and all they want is that same chance.

Of all the expulsions I have only read of ONE claiming they were acting in "self defense."Were not talking grade school children here.A couple of Seniors and a Sophmore! What could bring these brilliant young ladys' to blows?A boy squabble?I don't like the way you dress? You are ugly?Give me a break! They defied authority and are now paying the price.I can only hope that they have learned their lesson and we won't be reading about them in the Police Blotter!

Leave it to Councilman James Pugh to make this an issue about race. This has nothing to do with race, you freaking moron.. Everyone is being treated the same, black and white, but of course you are going to call the race card when it fits your needs.

Zero tolerance is fine and dandy, but wait a minute, if someone starts a fight with you, you have a right to defend yourself, only a fool would stand still and take a licking without defending theirselves, or continue to get pushed around, thats the law, self-defense!

Grandparents raising their grandchildren, where are the PARENTS?In jail?In rehab?Skipped out?Dropped out? If this isn't a race issue then why is Pugh calling for "Diversity traing and the district to hire more THAT LOOK LIKE OUR CHILDREN?And when did the NAACP ever get involved with anything for the advancement of white people? How do you make punishment fit an offense? Two days for a black eye, three for missing front teeth,a couple more for making janitors mop up the blood? How many for the nightmares the first grader suffered after being knocked unconscious riding on the school bus?

It just occurred to me, aren't these the same parents that refused to read to their kids when they were little because that was "The school's responsibility". Looks like the past is catching up with you. We now have a generation of dumb kids and un-attentive parents.

I think that this is crazy. This is not an issue of race. Did anyone read that the Larson child was expelled too? That kid was white. Just because it is "Black Pastors" does not mean anything. If it were "White Pastors" would we more easily get behind them? This is about our kids. Zero tolerance is not right. The fighting has not gone down. Look at the records. Since this policy was implemented it has gone up. Why should we support something that is not working? Stop looking at race and start looking for a way to help ALL of our kids.

So because Josie Freeman's grandson was a white B average football player, he shouldn't of been expelled? And when he's home he just sits there? How about give him a book? Take him to the library or better yet, hire a tutor? I'm more than certain schools aren't the only place one can find a math or science book. Just because he's expelled from school, that doesn't mean he's expelled from any intellectual stimulation. The total inaction and incompetence of parents to adjust to their child's situation is what should be addressed.

Part 2 ) you dont he would say it is the police's job not mine to do that. Well he has to remember is is that it is the school boards job to correct them under there watch and the parents jobs under there watch if he is going to be superman then he needs to be all the way around not pick and choose his fights.
