Man accused of assaulting paramedic

Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: February 26, 2008

WARREN — A city man who police said tried to steal a television set from Sam’s Club Friday afternoon was due in Warren Municipal Court today on numerous charges, including felonious assault, petty theft and falsification.

Lowell L. Jones, 46, 742 Bane St. S.W., remained at the Trumbull County Jail Monday on those charges and several warrants, according to court records.

A police report states officers were called to Sam’s Club, 1040 Niles Cortland Road S.E., about 4:30 p.m. on a shoplifting report. When officers arrived, the man was gone but a second man identified by the store clerk was walking to the parking lot, and they followed him to his car.

The driver of the car told police he had nothing to do with the incident, after which police found the suspect, later identified as Jones, lying in the back seat. When the officer knocked on the window, Jones opened the door and said he was having chest pains, the report states.

Jones said he did not have his identification and told police his name was Greg James. When police asked for his Social Security number or birth date for verification, Jones refused to give either, according to police.

After finding out the man was Jones, who had several warrants for his arrest, police got him out of the car and found the stolen television set on the back seat where he had been lying, the report states. Jones was put in the back of an ambulance with one hand cuffed to the gurney.

Then, while officers were getting information from the store manager, an employee said they were needed outside because Jones was fighting with paramedics. When officers got outside, one of the paramedics was strapping Jones to the gurney and the other paramedic was bleeding from the right side of his face.

The paramedic said Jones passed out and while he was administering a sternum rub, Jones woke up and punched him in the head. Jones was transported to St. Joseph Health Center for treatment of his chest pains, but he became uncooperative and was taken to jail after being cleared by hospital staff, the report states.

The police report states Jones had a warrant for failure to pay fines and costs out of Warren, a probation violation warrant out of Franklin County and a probation violation warrant out of Mahoning County.

According to court records, Jones has a criminal history dating back to 1998.
