He should probably start looking within his own fleet of mechanics. My dh and I were recently on a new car lot over a weekend, looking at (unsaid dealer) cars. We came across a security key box wide open with key exposed and doors unlocked. Several of the cars doors on that lot were unlocked. Being security minded as I am I called to talk to the owner and told him what I found and my concern that it could have easily been an accident by one of his salesmen, or not. This car with key access and doors unlocked was right on the edge of the road ....easy get away with no barriers to prevent someone. Of course we shut the lockbox and locked the doors. But I am very suspicious because I have personally seen a lot of "inside jobs."

Replacing a catalytic converter is nothing major (except the cost). It's the same as replacing a defective headlamp. Mr. Kufleitner is a fair person and has an excellent reputation. Why would you imply that he is dishonest?

Didn't see anything on Craigslist, but I only looked in the NE Ohio/ Pittsburgh area. Might want to check WV.

"Anyone going to the Canfield swap meet next weekend, please take a look around for anyone selling catalytic converters," he said on the Facebook page. He seriously said this? Now the people involved know someone will be watching for them? Why not keep his mouth shut and go himself looking for someone selling the catalytic converters?

Sorry, Can't help you. We are no longer allowed to report suspicious looking people. That would be profiling. Nothing wrong with someone walking around at night with bolt cutters and a hacksaw.

Hire an off duty policeman to sit in the lot during closed hours. The cost of doing business. Besides, you're going to pass the costs onto the customer.
