Apply the city income tax to the SNAP, SSI and TMHA benefits of Warren residents. That should bring in about $80 million a year to pay for fire protection.

Heck, a license fee on the Obamaphones in the city should be enough to keep those 15 firefighters.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

~ Illinois' Inexperienced Half Term Junior Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006

Lay them off. They were not needed to begin with and should not have been hired. Grants have limited time frames served by the whims of Congress, and cities in decline like Warren need to downsize their safety forces to meet their population.

Once again the fine leadership of the City of Warren sets a glowing example. They hire 15 firefighters on grants and the second the grants expire they can't even afford to keep 1 employee. They had 2 years to make plans to continue employing these people and instead they just hoped to get more grants. Great job once again.
