Until 1945 the United States never had a large peacetime standing army. The country's military was established on the basis of a small active military and a large reserve militia. In essence since 1945 we have maintained our military as though we were at war for those 68 years. That is insane and the cost of that is what has blown the national debt out of control. Roughly 50% of all expendatures by the Federal Government are for the military.

It is not possable to have a balanced budger or reduce the debt in any meaningful way when we are spending more on the military than the next 15 nations COMBINED. We have paid the entire bill for the Iraq war and the Afgan war. We cannot and should not be engaged in nation changing or nation building programs. That is exactly what these two conflicts turned into.

Latesinker posted " these employees should be grateful they are going to work 4 day weeks (for 6 months)" It doesn't STOP at 6 months. The sequester could very well continue through the new budget year which starts in September. It's NOT 6 months! It may be permanent! God forbid!

It really sounds to me like maybe they have 70 employees at the airbase that are expendable.

The President of the United States cannot spend one nickel without the APPROVAL OF CONGRESS. The House of Representitives has been under Republican control for the last two years. Has the National Debt increased during those two years?

The Republicans KNOW that serious cuts have to be made in defense spending, but they are POLITICLY afraid to do it. The Democrats KNOW that cuts are going to have to be made in domestic spending but they are POLITICLY afraid to do that. The sequester was designed to force those cuts IF the congress could not or DID NOT want to make them. HOW CAN ANYONE BLAME PRESIDENT OBAMA FOR THE INEPTNESS OC CONGRESS?

Easyrider, first you say that it was Obama's plan to make cuts through sequester, then you say Obama is spending the country bankrupt. Remember that it was the House and Senate that PASSED the sequester law. Remember also that the legislative branch has failed miserably in reaching a budget. The ONLY person being responsible in this whole mess IS PRESIDENT OBAMA.

annie. No one said this was not Obamas idea. It was designed to actualy get the repubs to do something. Not make them take another vacation. They have also not learned from Nov. that earned benifits are not up for debate.

Do any of you idiots realize when Bush left office the deficit was 8 trillion? He overspent, but Obama has added over 8 trillion in 4 years. This has got to stop, all you welfare supporters (oops I meant voters) can't keep taxing the rich to death. Do you realize people in California who make over 250,000. 00a year will be paying a combined federal and state tax of 62.5%? And Democrats want to raise taxes on them again. Would you continue to work if they were taxing you to death? Oh, right most who voted for him don't work.

?Republican Tea'ers,

2+2=4 doesn't suddenly become debatable just because you don't like the number 4.

You all lost that debate in Nov. Why keep trying?

You people wake up, Obama owns this. It was something he wanted in place in case the panel he chose to make cuts failed, which it did. I lost my job, these employees should be grateful they are going to work 4 day weeks (for 6 months) instead of losing their jobs completely. We need to make cuts somewhere our deficit is out of control. Obama is going to bankrupt this country if he doesn't stop.

And once the republicans have their say, the economy will plummet us back into the 1930's. Be prepared for increased lines in the soup kitchens and unemployment office. They think "cutting" your way out of debt is job creation........IDIOTS!!!!!
