Our leaders should support ConstitutionFebruary 17, 2013DEAR EDITOR: I understand Vice President Biden’s quote recently, “take thousands of people out of harm’s way” is a great idea, but historically, gun control has never worked.... Showing 25 of 331 comments Show More Comments

Read the constitution. It does not say that you have a right to own guns. It says you have a right to form a militia and bearing guns are part of that militia. We need common sense gun laws as proposed by Biden & Obama now to stop all the gun violence starting with universal background checks for gun ownership of any kind, and the end of assault rifles and large magazine ownership in the USA. LaPierre & his NRA are NUTS!

The author of this letter stated that he is all for keeping guns out of criminals hands. What he didn't say was that he supported background checks for used gun sales. He speaks of his high regard for the NRA but fails to mention that the NRA was for gun show background checks before they were against them.

Suppose in the future, gun manufactuers develope a new rifle, called the atomic rifle, that can wipe out cities. Using your logic, this would be legal and constitutional. Can you imagine would could happen? Will you still stand behind your constitutional views as thousands of people are being wiped out? Look, I'm all for guns, but I'm also for common sense approaches to stop the endless violence and if banning certain guns, and having background checks helps, why would anyone complain? No one complains about search and seizure laws being violated at airports. Why? Public safety.

What woke all the bleeding hearts up so early on a Sunday? Guess we'll have to wait for the conservative minority to get home from Church before we get any common sense injected into this topic.

Pure NRA drivel, these so called patriots that wrap themselves in the flag and spout about abiding, protecting and defending the constitution run the other way when it comes to backing their big mouths. Particularly insane Wayne La Pierre and crap his pants Ted Nugent.

Make as many laws as they can...they still have to come and get em.
Stupid arguement they cannot enforce. Waste of time and money.

I agree with both Dan & Albert, it appears only the extremist have this fear of losing their guns. The very folks who need mental testing before owning guns. Criminals won't be tested or give up their guns, yet criminals are'nt responsible for a single massacre in recent history.
Each massacre was committed by a lunatic who obtained their weapons by legal means. UTF once described these lunatics as "registered democrats" suggesting to restrict their gun ownership. He failed to also mention these lunatics are all "white males" who I'm not so sure he wants to restrict their gun ownership.
The only solution is to level the field with everyone owning guns, being trained in their use, and be poised to defend themselves against those intending to do harm. Either we all have guns or we all don't, I don't see a middle passage that works or satisfies all. Any lunatic wanting a gun will find it...

"Each massacre was committed by a lunatic who obtained their weapons by legal means."
not true.
nomorecrap...the people who have these guns are trying to tell you dont push it. thats all. you people are going to far with this stuff.
just stop with the gun talk. thats all. no need to push this issue. the people that own these guns arent giving them up and the people that are scared of em arent going to have the nuts to go door to door to get get em. so, stop with the stupid talk.
unversal background checks, need universal registration to happen, which leads to confiscation.
its a stupid arguement that is going to be pushed to far by the communists acting like lovers of peace and safety.

the people that own these guns dont have a single fear of losing them...not a single fear. that sounds good for your arguement. the people that ow these guns are trying to tell you their not giving them up, no matter what you and the govt say. they are not being put through some kind of testing where the govt ok's it either.
they arent scared though. believe that!

The biggest problem with the NRA is the fear they instill in people. The truth is most people will never be the victim of a crime.

The second amendment is not part of the constitution for hunting or for militias. The 2nd amendment was put into our constitution specifically so the citizens of this country would have the ability, if their govt became oppressive, to defend themselves against that oppressive govt. PERIOD.
you people have your politicians write all the laws you want. write a million of em if you have to. however, dont think for a second, any citize that owns one of these guns you want is just going to hand it over.
the first act of any dictator, get the guns.
its not heppening in this country, no matter how many laws you allow your politicians to write. LOL

With regard to the quote you posted from T.J. in your words what do you think he is saying? We had a period of time when citizens rose up against their government, it was called the civil war my man. When the treasonists had been defeated the Federal government was even more powerful than it had been prior to the war. That rebellion, brought on by people who thought about our government then as you think of our government today, was a total failure for the people who rushed to bear arms against their own nation.

Your argument won't hold water united. All the lefties think Jefferson was a whack job and don't hold the founding father's opinions in very high regard. If they had any respect for the great men who carved out this nation they wouldn't try to manipulate their words and ideals to fit a skewed agenda!

reallytiredofit...way off man.
i look at your posts and try to reason with them, but cannot. you're views are too anti-American. they are too pro-govt.
law abiding citizens who exercise their 2nd amendment right have no reason to fear any of this legislation or any traps being put in place to possibly deny them their 2nd amendment right based on some govt program. Period.
I have no idea where your peoples fear comes from, but there seems to be an awful lot of it around lately. glad im not as scared as some of you.

Nothing but pure republican drivel Josh!! It's funny, you can tell by the agrees and disagrees on which person is a repub vs. democrat. Repubs don't have reasoning skills. At first they accused Obama of being a Muslim when he was running for office......WRONG!! Then repubs accused Obama for being a terrorist......WRONG!!! Now they are afraid of this magic gun fairy that will somehow appear from nowhere and take their killing machines.....WRONG AGAIN!!!

obammy is a muslim, obammys strings are pulled by the financial terrorists that control him(just like bush), and americans arent worried about him taking our guns. thats why some Americans are arming themselves to the teeth.
its not because they fear govt is going to take their guns. LOL! its because they are preparing for war if they try. you shouldnt confuse fear and preparation IHATE.

Supporting the constitution has become the practice of ones beliefs. Much like religion. It is a shame that organizations have come to the level of lobbying our gooberment officials. Although I have lost my respect for much of what the NRA has come to stand for I do wish to keep my many guns. I have paid for them, purchased them with for-thought and research to obtain safe reliable weapons. When interpting the constitution we remember that all words have a connotative and denotative meaning. They also have implied and literal meaning. At 52 years old I have heard the argument since grade school that part of the reason for the need to bear arms is to stop our gooberment from oppressing its people. I went to a pretty liberal school as a child. We have no reason to fear guns, any more than knives, fence post, or shovels. We need to fear the individuals that shouldn't have access to guns, knives and shovels without supervision. We need to pay attention to our fellow citizens.

(continued) and children and when we recognize issues address them. We need to know the difference between problem behavior and episodic situations in an individuals life. We spend so much time, money and energy on fighting, when we all know how to address the issue. Stop the hate, make the necessary actions possible. The constitution should not be under attack or its meaning questioned.
