A fair and balanced approach to gun control is needed. Eliminate the ownership of assault rifles and large magazines. Improve mental health availability and make people register their guns. No one is saying you can't have sporting rifles or eliminate hunting and skeet shooting. Just common sense measures to prevent disasters like Sandy Hook and Columbine.

Warrenproud,

The assault weapon (liberal to english translation: Really scary looking, semi automatic rifle. You pull the trigger once, you get one bullet.) was in the TRUNK of the idiot's car. The kids were killed by a nut with a couple of handguns. This same nut would have been in an asylum if Jimmy Carter hadn't signed the order to close them down (violated their civil rights). Reagan gets blamed because he was enforcing Carter's law.

Never let a tragedy go to waste. Ask the people of Treblinka and Aushwitz how much good gun control did for them. While you're at it, ask the Russian Kulocks, the Great Leap Forward Chinese, and the non Khmer Rouge Cambodians. Wait. You can't. They're all dead. Guns don't kill masses of people, governments kill people.

Back in the day we would just put the mental people in straight jackets and lock them up. Even normal people that are just plain idiots are excused from their actions by giving their actions a mental medical term. Bi-polar etc.

Like as a child, like most kids I had ADHD. My dad cured that "disorder" with a sore rear end right away. People have to stop making excuses for others actions and hold them accountable.

So who determines that a person should be locked up in mental institution Daniel?

If there is no difference between a assult rifle and a sporting rifle except the way they look then why aren't semi-automatic sporting rifles the hot ticket?

There is one basic truth GUN CHECKS WORK. They have worked for over 50 years on the sale of new guns. Gun Checks need to be universal so that a felon or deranged person CANNOT buy a firearm either NEW or USED. There is NO infringement with gun checks. Any person wishing to purchase a firearm today will still be able to do so.

The biggest concern is, when will these mentally crazed lunatics take their massacres to next level? Armed police, citizens, gun control is simply not enough. There are to many disturbed people who are intelligent enough to carry out these senseless acts. Will more guns stop chemical and explosive attacks?

So who does the GUN CHECK when the hoodlum is buying the saturday night special on the corner? You think gang members go to Federally licensed firearms dealers to get their guns? I personally don't have a problem with the idea of developing an "instant check" type of database and requiring dealers to use it for any sales - including gun shows. I do question how they will define and create a database of "mentally unfit" people. Does this mean anybody who was ever given a script for stress? Depression? Who decides? And once again.... somebody under doctor's care for stress is excluded while the crack-head thug buys his gun on the street. That'll save lives.

universal background checks CANNOT happen without instituting universal registration also. they are different, but you can't accomplish one with out the other. if your pushing for background checks, you must also be pushing for universal registration of all firearms as well.....thats really dangerous. when they know who has the guns, they no longer need go door to door and confiscation becomes easy peasy.

you people who are pushing for this have no idea what a huge mistake you are making. in 1930s germany, those people had no idea what they were going along with until it was too late.

you are only going to get the chance to make this mistake once....thats it. there is no going back from what you want if you push this thru.

"The prospect of tyranny may not grab the headlines the way vivid stories of gun crime routinely do. But few saw the Third Reich coming until it was too late. The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed—where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once."---copied and pasted from ananymous commenter

you do anything that even scratches the surface a tiny bit on the 2nd amendment in any way, you are asking for the worst.

these universal checks and registration you people want in no way deters an adam lanza from planning a massacre like the one in newton....no way.

what you people are supporting is dangerous.
