This is the first national holiday to honor a great individual black American. The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King lives in each of us and we are responsible to promote, teach and live his American Dream.

Leave it to Mrs. Warrenproud to make the Martin Luther holiday about being black. You, maam, diminish his legacy by labeling him as strictly a black American. If you really look into the teachings of Martin Luther, he was more about progressivism. I am not saying I agree with that concept, but Martin Luther was more than just a civil rights activist. He preached for the entire lower class to have the chance to be free. Of course he will be best know for his defending of the black race, BUT, the truth is, he was a CIVIL RIGHTS leader. Which civil rights can include lower white class americans. The dream he had will never become reality because if ceetain groups can sit down as one, there will always be radical racism on BOTH sides. And you maam, have proved time and time again, what side you are on.

To paraphrase MLK: I dream of a day when a person will be judged by their character, not by the color of their skin. Sadly, that day has not yet come. Witness the ESPN commentator's statement that RGIII is "not black enough." (Then witness RGIII's wonderful retort, I think I'll be a fan of his forever).

We are not a "post-racial" society, as the national media keeps reporting, as long as things like the KKK, the Black Panthers, and WarrenProud are around.

Question to the commentators - did you go to the event? If so, you would know what the message was and the purpose of the event and the A. Philip Randolph Institute: to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King, Asa Philip Randolph, Darryl Parker and Deryck Toles. Next time I invite you to attend.

No lady, I did not attend. But you make my point in a way. It was about the legacy of all of those you mention. Thier legacy I am sure was more than just being black. Too many people associate MLK with being a great black man. He was simply a great American. A leader for the supressed. Thebear, I agree. As long as people who will always hold true to thier radical racist and political agendas are around, we will never move past race or cultural differences.

@ladymadonna,thank you for your comments. If you will allow me ,I would like to explain something.Artic and thebear do understand your point. They are among the few that do.They were responding to warrenproud.I am a liberal, bleeding heart,left-wing progressive.Warrenproud claims to be the same, but continuously makes racist statements against white people. We are all equal, and discrimination by any race towards another race is un-acceptable.Thank you for the invitation, and perhaps I should find time on MLK day to attend a local event in his honor.

Ladymadonna4,I should point out that Artic and the bear are NOT liberals, like myself, but they are also NOT racist. It is a mis-conception amongst many liberals that they are the only ones that are not racist. That is not true.Warrenproud proves that daily.

Yep savj1c, it is not often you will see a middle age white man, who is a registered republican, and for the most part a conservative, defending Luther Kings legacy,,, :)

All mankind is created equal...it is what we chose to do with the life we live that makes the difference. MLK was a staunch supporter of love and respect for fellow man. How can we, as a society, honor a man we fall so short of emulating?

Very interesting views but I have to disagree with those interpreting WarrenP as racist. Artic you're actually expanding on WarrenP's comment and seem more in sync than at odds. And yes MLK also fought for lower class poor whites and every oppressed human. The fight for equality still takes place and at least today's pool of ignorant racist Americans has diminished substantially as evidenced by folks like Savj1c, Bear, Truthmonger and other decent whites who regularly see human beings as a single community rather than divide us when criminals of any race make negative news. Our battle as human beings is to keep our eyes on those like Afret, USB and a few others seeking to keep us divided by complexion and Political affiliation. We're winning because they're either dying off or silenced because we're not fooled or moved by their rhetoric. Colon Powell a Republican gave a great interview on Meet The Press Sunday, a Republican must watch!!!

If you're a supporter of the Republican party you need to watch that interview in order to learn something about where you need to be if you ever plan to find favor among the majority or mainstream of Americans. This ignorance and hatred for everything non Republican is archaic, outrageous, un-American and abnormal Afret and USB. You're of the type & class modern conservative Republicans want out of the party. Don't take my word, study the experts and true leaders of the party, your brand of racism is no longer practiced or wanted by mainstream Republicans or decent human beings...

The man's name is Colin, not Colon, Powell. Not sure if some of you just don't know how to spell his name or if you're making a weak attempt at bathroom humor.

Geez what paranoia, it was an honest mistake Bear! Why would I salute the man only to intentionally insult him with "bathroom humor"? Yes the infallible NMC misspelled Colin and had'nt thought of or made the connection to Colon until YOU brought it up. Guess my mind does'nt automatically attempt to relate a word to it's worst aspect or extreme...

Absolutely correct Dose @ 2:04pm, an entire County needs to read that.

What is this tit 4 tat foolishness you do USB? You're exactly what's wrong with Republicans and race relations in America. Which I bet your constant divisiveness and pouting is why you found yourself alone & trolling this site New Years eve while the happy people on the planet were in relaxation mode and grateful for having lived another year.

NomoreCrap, With all dues respect. Wp is one of the biggest racist, bigoted, narrow minded, politicly rhetorical people I ever saw comment on these boards. She will come in, toss her one liner comments, then never debate any issue at all. I do nto feel I expanded on her comment at all. She made it very specific to call MLK a black American. Which is NOT what his legacy should be. And it is stupid to label him as such, that would be like saying Lincoln was a great WHITE American. They both had greatness, and MLK was aout not having divides, so why can we not call him simply, American? Why must WP label him black. Because, she would never do any different.

USB, I've learned just to ignore him. He obviously has issues and should probably seek professional help. For someone to come on here and profess to be the spokesperson and messiah for a class of people (his forte) speaks volumes. The fact that he believes there are classes of people in this country is troubling. Just let him rant and act like a savior of the down-trodden...kind of amusing really.
