I believe it's a fantastic and necessary prerequisite to working with the homeless to have been there yourself. I've known of assistants at the Urban League who I've spoken to on behalf of folks needing mortgage relief and other help, and they have no clue.
Hired because of who they know many of them have no idea what it's like to be in a panic or dire need of advice or direction to benefits. At the very least these "educated types" need to be advised by someone who has lived the life of poverty & homelessness. In fact we can probably get many of them off the streets if given an opportunity for full time employment and sober living...
