Isn’t America still a great nation?
DEAR EDITOR: It was way back in 1962 when I saw this poster in the clock house of Niles Republic Steel: 6.3 for 1963. The minor recession that we were in caused some layoffs of steel workers. This included the skilled craftsmen as well as the production people. Only a few of us were working and doing some old construction repairs. There was no new construction allowed because the pocket from which the people being on new construction were paid was sewn shut. There was only the Cold War and this was like two adversaries looking through a hole in the fence and trying to gather classified information on each other. The 6.3 for 1963 was the profits desired, and if this was reached the laid-off people came back to their jobs. As we philosophized about how the minor setback in production and sales could be made whole, I said that it is too bad that we only do well if we sell cars and have a hot war.
